Finally Trump has lost it.

Americans have a weird view on guns but never have I know one Association to have such sway over the American Government.

Has every President stood by the NRA?

Dont know why we bother. .... but we do!

Obama tried repeatedly but got blocked by Congress.

There's a huge cultural difference now between pro-gun Americans and the rest of the U.S. and the rest of the World.

I had a chat with a friend of a friend on facebook yesterday. This man was a pro-gun U.S. citizen. He maintained that the Second Amendment existed to protect the First Amendment, whereas any reading of it illustrates that it is given no such power or obligation, and he also rejected my point that the courts protected the Constitution and that if it was to be protected by guns, it would be stated so in the Constitution.

He gave up on those points after a while and changed tack, claiming that the Second Amendment was written to fight tyrannical governments and that the U.S. presently had one - basically they now need 300 million guns to fight Trump.

I left him at it. Not my monkeys, not my circus.

Must admit Brian, I don't get their thinking. I suppose when there are 300 million guns out there it has reached the point where it's nigh on impossible to reign them in and probably take more than the might of the US army!

Maybe small changes are the answer, reduce the capability of automatic weapons first, and college kids demonstrating on the streets creating a ground swell, may have same effect as women did, marching against the troubles in Ireland. Who knows?

In the end, it's easy for us to blame the politicians, vested interests etc but it's up to the public to react in large numbers. Elected members tend to take notice when their votes are threatened.

The reality is that the US twice failed to invade Canada and want to stay heavily armed because they hope to succeed sometime in the future.

Ha!

The whole situation is fcuked up.

I tend to view it from a Aristotelian perspective. If you want to understand a thing, you need to assess its four causes: material, formal, efficient and purpose.
Material: metal
Formal: gun
Efficient (how did it gain its form?): gun factory, designer
Purpose: to kill

So the purpose of a gun is to kill. However, society does not endorse killing. Arming some, most or all of society does not lessen the risk of unlawful killing. The purpose of gun is therefore incompatible with a peaceful, safe society.

What would a just moral agent do?

Either restrict the proliferation of arms to those sanctioned by society to act as guardians (army) or protectors (justice, police) and ban all other agents from their use, or simply remove guns from society in totality. Since the society still requires protection from outside agents, a total ban (i.e. one that includes the army) would represent a threat. In certain circumstances, some agents may need to use lethal force (or the threat thereof) to protect a just society, so it makes sense to have the option within the legal framework though not necessarily to arm the entire police force.

The Golden Mean can be attained through the ban of arms to the public at large but restricting them only to agents that maintain a just society.

Look, if a 2300 years dead Greek can work it out, I'm fairly sure a bright orange Yank can manage it.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

Here's my solution.

Choose the three or so states where gun ownership is most popular.

Remove all gun control in those states.

Subsidise the move to other states of those who don't want to live in a no gun control state.

Enforce European style gun control everywhere else.

Leave the gun lovers to kill each other while everyone else gets on with their life in peace.

Trump being a total WUM as usual - that's what he's paid to do.

All these school shootings deploying the usual divide and conquer methods by the powers that be - left v right, young v old, white v non-white, etc. And everyone gets played every time. Not quite to the same degree in the UK but look at our current political discourse over Brexit etc - form two distinct groups and let them fight each other over it, while the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the country goes further down the pan.

Needless to say there should be tighter gun controls in the US, but as ever with these events there are ulterior motives.

Wait until one of the teachers has a meltdown. Then they'll decide to give the kids a selection of firearms - maybe Smith & Wesson can launch a new 'junior' range in bright colours.

Looking at that Site underlines how nuts is the lack of control on sales of straight-up military hardware.

Apparently the majority of the USA's guns are owned by a small minority of "collectors". Sales go up under Democrat presidents as this group gets anxious that their supply will dry up. And presumably the industry knows that most or many of them are proper guns'n'ammo-porn fruitcakes who would't pass a fit-for-purpose background check in 100 years.

Greece, a short, squat olive tree.
America is a gun.

Brazil is football on the sand.

Germany, an oompah band.
America is a gun.

Holland is a wooden shoe.

Australia, a kangaroo.

I always think with the gun issue we’re missing the obvious solution to the problem!

By all means allow them to bare arms. In fact, let them all have as many guns as they want. In fact, the more powerful a weapon, the greater their right to them...just outlaw bullets!!!

I know, simples innit!!

Apparently, Trump *is* going to introduce gun control legislation.

He is going to make it illegal to be unarmed.

On a serious note, what is it going to take for gun control to be introduced? Who needs to die? How many need to die?

I make you right!
Tell you what though would make classroom management a whole lot easier in most schools.

But if this arming teachers thing ever got going you can just imagine where it would quickly head.....

"Prosecute The Sniper Principal Say Family of Gunned Down Teen"
The Family of 19yr old ex-college student John Doe, who was shot and killed last month by a Springfield College Principal after attemping to go on the rampage with a semi-automatic weapon, have called for the Principal to be prosecuted for murder on the basis that their son had a history of mental illness and the gun he had fired at students and teachers as he entered the college quadrant was firing blanks. The family argue that the Principal discharged his own weapon too quickly and did not check to see if any of the students and teachers who were trying to flee the gunman had actually been hit.
The Principal has been suspended on full pay on the advise of the County Prosecutor and has gone to ground at an unknown location after a fresh media circus convened outside the Principals home following the statement from John Doe's family last night......

Donald Trump, what happens if in the chaos the teacher accidentally shoots and kills an innocent kid. Absolute shambles.

There really is only one solution. There should be a mass shooting at a pro-gun rally.

Or even a guilty kid. If a student comes in on a shooting spree, what this is asking for is a teacher to calmly pull it a gun and shoot one of their own students. Is that part of teaching qualifications these days? There is a teacher shortage and this is going to put a lot of people off this profession.

However, and I can't believe I'm going to say this... The headline is a bit sensationalist. What Trump (claims he) meant was that 20% of teachers, with appropriate training and background, would be armed. Don't really see how that helps the problem but still, he's not suggesting every teacher has a gun.

Trump is mad as a box of frogs and the lunatic really has taken over the asylum. Arming teachers is only going one way and it's not in a positive direction. Under the current electoral system in the US (and elsewhere) you need money and plenty of it to win. According to a number of credible news sources the NRA donated around $21 million directly to Trump and over $36 million to the campaign in total. Guns ain't going away anytime soon.

Meanwhile in the quiet streets of the UK our kids are busily stabbing themselves to death.............

Teachers are some of the most stressed out, mentally unstable group of workers on the planet - I should know, I'm married to one!

Giving them weapons is a complete and utter recipe for disaster.

American politicians just don't have the balls to stand up to the NRA, their influence and their money.

Mind you, if they DID manage to 'ban' guns, whole communities would refuse to hand them over, armed militia would form (if they haven't already) and there'd be a virtual civil war on the cards.

57,000 people have been killed by guns in the USA in the last 3 years.

In 2018, there have already been nearly 2,000 gun deaths in the USA, and there have been 34 mass shootings (ie, 4 or more killed or injured, excluding the shooter).

46% of American gun owners who live with children do not keep their firearms locked. 30% said their weapons were kept loaded at all times and stored in an easily accessible location.

F***ing nuts!

I totally agree mate. How can you expect people with guns to give them up without a fight?
It can only work on future generations by banning new sales and hope that the idea of owning a gun makes it unacceptable to the children growing up now.
It’s total madness that it’s illegal to buy a handgun until you reach a certain age but you can buy a semi-automatic rifle before you’re allowed to drink alcohol.

Firstly, as a retired teacher myself, this is is bonkers, but then I’m thinking in a uk context. In my experience, the contrasts within the American population make our Brexit v remain seem like a technical difference. They have all sorts of strange outlooks on life, which, coupled with their superpower status, seems to make them oblivious of what the rest of the world think - remember most of them will never venture outside their own territory. There’s not much of a world view there, and harking back to their own history as something of a moral justification isn’t surprising. After all, we have done it too - where do you think Brexit came from other than a probably misplaced view as our nation as being the only one that occupies the high ground?
By the way violent teachers were certainly there, but no longer thank god. The whole profession is far removed from Wackford Squeeres and even Bullet Baxter. Trust me, our children are close to receiving the best education they ever have, if only the powers that be would just allow schools to get on with the job and allow schools and students to move forward into the current century and not try to take us back to the bad old days when teachers really did need chalk accuracy to distract pupils who were bored out of their skulls!
