So they gambled £21.5M on staying in the Premier League. It is what the PL and FFP has turned football into gamble to stay up and if it does not pay off FFP dictates the need for a fire sale

That great manager Tony Pulis who will probably leave Boro by the end of the year and walk into a job somewhere else.
Is that the same Tony Pulis who managed Middlesborough who were a goal behind in the second leg in the play-off's and his team never had shot on goal. Impressive. You know he's on the merry(money)-go-round and walk into a well paid job when Boro get rid of him.

I think you can blame this on the West Brom employee who inserted £3.5 million release fee into the contract.
Also turning down a £25 million offer for an average Premier defender!
Keeping Evans was not the gamble on staying up. Not signing anyone who can score goals was the risk they were prepared to take!
FFP has nothing to do with this transfer & it certainly isn't part of a fire sale. That may happen, but only if players who are not on a relegation clause contract, start leaving for amounts below expectations.
EDIT I've just seen that WBA have made a £7 million bid for Reid from Bristol City. That doesn't smell of being scared of FFP!

I guess they would have regarded it as an investment rather than gambling.
The flip side of the clubs that will do anything to get out of the Championship is the clubs that will do anything to stay in the Premiership.

WBA received £95m for finishing bottom and will continue receive another £90m over the next three seasons. Had they finished 17th they'd have got £107m and another season at the trough. So yeah a £21.5m gamble wasn't exactly the end of the world.
