Scoring 90 goals in a team that for much of the time was somewhere between poor and abject earns him hero status for me. He also:
1. Set up a lot of goals;
2. Suffered an injury early in his career which affected him badly;
3. Often played in midfield in his second spell, so the goal scoring ratio looks worse than it is.
4. Scored that header against Chelsea!!!

Suffering since 1978.

"Gallen signed a professional contract for Queens Park Rangers on his 17th birthday after setting phenomenal scoring records whilst in the youth team, breaking Jimmy Greaves' long-standing record at that level" (pinched from Wiki btw).

I think that knee injury almost ended his career? At the very least he had to adapt his game and become a different sort of attacker. Less pace but more of a holding and bringing others into the game kind of player.

Clive Allen - could only manage three on his debut against a sht Coventry side.

Terry Venables - Two chances against Spurs in the Cup Final and he still couldn't win. Plus had to make us wait another season for promotion. Tsser.

Adel Taarabt - well, it was only the Championship wasn't it?

I couldnt get the reception Joey Barton got after his french sabatical. I hated the git and the way he treated our club, yet somehow he got away with it *

* I note he may not have been given hero status however,

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

Does it really mater if you feel he is overrated or not. A player being seen as a legend is all subjective anyway.

I don't think anyone has ever put him in the top bracket of our best ever players, all seems a bit bizarre to start a thread like this

Seriously? An r through and through. That injury at pompey screwed up his career but still gave his all for the club for another ten years! I sometimes despair about our fanbase!

Anyone who was still watching at one of our very lowest ebbs (and there weren't many still watching, trust me) will understand just how important he was when he came back. We immediately won 4-0, and from then on he was a vital part of our team, helping us get promoted, getting that vital goal at Sheff Wed, scoring tons of crucial goals, and setting up many more.
These days I don't always agree with his viewpoints, but he was, to my mind, Ollie's most important signing.

Bare bones.

I agree wholeheartedly, we were behind the goal at Pompey when he done his ACL the poor bastard absolutely screamed in agony as he scored the goal and done his ACL at the same time. I've seen the bloke supporting Rangers in the away end at Cardiff, Colchester Utd and Notts bloody Forest, does that make him a hero? no but what it does it makes him one of us and that's all that matters to me not stupid fcking stats.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Modern day hero. He has a standing invitation to marry my daughter (in about 9 years or so).

Gallen did miss a lot of chances. He remains probably the worst striker I've seen when he's running one at one at the keeper. If he had to think he'd mess it up but if he just stuck a foot out, he was pretty deadly. Only ever saw him score one from distance though.

Much like Bircham he seemed to get by on his being a fan.

Not sure he's a hero but my answer is Gavin Peacock. He was awful but could be decent when we were like 3-0 up and that seemed to win the crowd over. Not a player you could rely on when we were losing, which of course we mostly were.

ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE THROUGH MARTI THE REDEEMER WHO STRENGTHENS ME.
