When did the club stop doing this?

The grass is always greener.

Is it me, but given our financials, there seems to be a lot of wage earners in that photo?

30 players - that does seem a lot!

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

Despite every window the fans wanting more players & moaning when some go out on loan, every home game we have a bigger squad than the oppo.

The club have included, in the photo, all 30 players listed under 'Squad' on the matchday programme. And yes, it will probably be larger than most, if not all, opposition teams this season but (in my opinion) includes a number of players who are unlikely to feature too often during the rest of the season such as:
Oteh, Chair, Kakay, Smyth and Sylla
And those unlikely to feature at all such as:
Goss, Shodipo, Hamalainen, Phillips and Owens.
Thus reducing the size of the actual Squad to 20 players.

Two thoughts:

1. Not sure I agree with your maths, because when all is said and done, the squad size is still 30!

2. Should you still contend otherwise, then that still leaves ten other players requiring wages.

Thus, to go back to my earlier point; we still have some trimming to do.

Don't disagree, I was just trying to differentiate between the size of our squad in comparison to most visiting teams who seem less likely to include many of their younger (U23) players.
With regard to the finances, I suspect that eight of the ten I mentioned (exceptions being Sylla and Goss) are not earning huge salaries and some of those eight may eventually become first team regulars, thus reducing the need to go into the market to purchase ever more players.
The only other possible additional argument is whether seeing their names in the programme helps to motivate the younger players and spur them on to wanting to become first team regulars.

The last one they put out had people like the 'Equipment Monitorer', 'Kit Manager' and 'Performance Enhancement Consultant' and still had 30 players.

Other considerations -

It's entirely possible that 2 or 3 players may leave in January (Freeman, Eze, Luongo ?)
Rangel is only here until Jan.
With embargo in Jan, it's highly unlikely we'll replace any of the above to the same standard.
Hall has been out for nearly 18 months, Shodipo for 6 months ?
