Have been in the US since the summer and arrived back this week and going to the game on Sat.

I have watched the carnage in the US political system, but that was evened-out in the mid-term elections. Watching the madness this morning, it looks like a Tory coup by the ERG and other right-wing nut-cases.

I am no Tory, but May has to see them off before they throw this country under the bus!

Whatever the result this evening, if one of that swivel-eyed shower won a leadership contest it would take the national mania to a completely new level. I reckon she'll stay but the time wasting will make an Article 50 extension necessary at the very least.

A magnificent football club, the love of our lives, finding a way to finally have its day in the sun.

I can't stand May, beating the drum that she wants to deliver what the people voted for (they didn't vote for this). She's slimy, odious... and then I read on the Beeb the 6 or 7 possible contenders, and I still feel queasy.

ALL of them are bonkers IMO, all sides.

It was clear from June 2016 they don’t have a clue what the country wants or how to manage it.
They’re all self serving parasites who work for the benefit of the few not the vast majority, which they should, it’s their job to.

Cameron was so sure of a Remain vote he called a referendum he thought would just happen as he thought and go away. I’m sure had he any inkling it would have been so tight he wouldn’t dare risk it.
As said, no clue.

May staying = bad (lets face it, asking a remainer to oversee a leave deal is like asking a QPR fan to become CEO at Chelsea)

May going = bad. All the likely replacements are just as odious and probably worse. Bunch of jumped up hooray henry’s who will be even more self serving.

House of Parliament discussions are embarrassing, I’ve seen school kids behave better.

Politics at cabinet/parliment level is screwed.

Democracy at its finest - 150 clueless wonders who can't arrive at a decision on the most important decision in a generation get to chose the leader of the country.

both sides are an absolute joke imo. May has brought forward a deal delivering on most of what people voted for but it wasn't everything (which was impossible) so toys have come out of the pram. Labour seem to think they can do better but the EU are say they won't re negotiate, the Tories are split between a deal, no deal or a second vote and don't seem to know what they want.

Now we have a leadership bid and a probable general election which will end up like the last one where no one wins.

It's a complete mess.

Hoping 12th December goes down as a defining day in history.

Get rid of the incompetent in charge, set about installing a Leaver in charge of Brexit, upset the Establishment and big business by going for No deal, batten down the hatches as the Left get behind the Establishment and big business (I know, the countries gone crazy, but that's where they stand), carnage on the streets as we go our own way, the majority of the voting public tire of anarchy that's not in their name, a new party forms from the people for the people and sets about harnessing WTO rules in our interest (although the EU would be back begging for a free trade deal by then) and creating a society that taxes excessive property ownership to the hilt and puts it back in the hands of the young to lay claim to those empty properties, and invest any surplus in care for the elderly.

The only downside for my generation will be a temporary heavy fall in the price of the houses we live in, big deal I've got to live somewhere so the price is largely irrelevant.

We should have left the EU right away and then started the negotiations.
May had bodged the whole thing since she became PM. Calling a snap election was catastrophic stupidity and now she's negotiated a deal that suites no one. As a leave voter, I would rather she just says we're staying in now to be honest.

Somebody will correct me if I am wrong but with all the doom laden predictions before the referendum should there be a leave vote let alone actually leaving the NI question was never raised. Did nobody think of it on the remain side.

how would we have 'left the EU right away', exactly?

Yes, It was one of the reasons that I was an unenthusiastic remainer. I argued about the NI/Ireland border with Leave colleagues and was told it was a nothing issue. I saw it mentioned in quite a few newspaper pieces, so you’d think the Union-loving Hard Brexiteers might have figured out their work around by now.

After the referendum result those in charge should have decided what we actually want from the whole process, how it would work etc before triggering Article 50. Why the rush to start the clock running when we didn't have a clear strategy?!

The people in charge of the Leave campaign didn't think beyond the referendum result. We're negotiating from a position of weakness as it is clear that we didn't know what we wanted at the outset and we still don't seem to have a clue.

It's such a divisive issue. Chuck into the mix that we're negotiating with a time limit in place and it's a recipe for disaster.

Of course, if the EU really cared about Ireland they'd just carry on with a free trade deal with no provisions and the NI 'problem' would no longer be a problem.

I don't know why we've even entertained this stick we're being beaten with. When the EU say we need a border, we say 'well we're not putting a border in so you build a fckin border, and good luck with that'.

I can imagine the prospect of the IRA and UVF getting 'active' in Brussels, Paris and Berlin soon focusing their minds on an alternative.

This. Absolutely a million times over.

What is happening with this whole brexit fiasco is utter insanity. I suspect if May does go, she’ll be replaced by one of the ERG hardliners who will drive through a no deal exit.

If that happens, the “austerity” of the last 10 years will look like a minor inconvenience compared to what’s coming.

True.

Like Konk I was an unenthusiastic Remainer but David Davis is making a good point today; there's still time to set out a WTO option (wrongly called the "no deal" option).

For some reason May discarded this option right at the beginning and also accepted the way that EU set out the whole negotiations.

Makes sense to me to have a serious look at the WTO version.

At the very least it might make Brussels sit up and take notice and it might also dig May/whoever out of the current hole they're in.

What was stopping a leaver taking control 2 years ago? Boris and Gove could have become prime minister but shit themselves and run away leaving someone else to carry the can.

The whole problem with this is no one can agree on a good outcome for this. You want to just stick 2 fingers up and go it alone which is impossible, any deal will involve us giving something up which no one seems to want and a second vote just pisses everyone off and just delays the problem for another few months.

Last night I saw some of a programme called "The sex business", probably on Channel 5, about Dominatrices and their clients. The latter were much more into real pain than I had imagined - stapling people, electric shocks etc are quite mainstream apparently. One dominatrix went to some S&M convention in the States and, not being able to take all her kit with her, had a happy few days kicking naked men in the bollocks, really hard. It seemed they were queuing up for it. I gave up when they got on to the more "specialist" practice of nailing people's balls to a plank.

Anyway, all these counter-intuitive proclivities gave me an insight into the hard-Brexit mindset - there's no accounting for folk.

You really literally have no idea what you're talking about. Rather than spout a load of nonsensical angry man in the pub invective, why don't you spend a little time educating yourself on the issues involved?

In case you hadn't noticed, it was while we fannied about with a soft Brexit that the EU realised they could nail our balls to a plank and did.

Perhaps if the UK takes on the role of the Dominatrix we might get somewhere.

I don't think there is a parliamentary majority for a no deal Brexit.

Problem is there isn't a commons majority for remain, 2nd referendum or the 'May Brexit Plan' either - hence the mess and the futility of a tory leadership contest.

At some stage parliament HAS to decide what its going to do!
