I've got one of those portable air conditioners on wheels, the ones that have the hose leading out of the window. Highly recommended if a tad noisy. They cool the room in seconds. My abode gets very hot in the summer so it's a Godsend.

Remove shirt, sit in garden/park.*
There, done.
* - absolutely not to be confused with remove shirt, sit on Northern Line, which people seem to think is acceptable for some reason.
Has Clive dozed off in his hammock? Good. Meanwhile here's something gratuitous yet not too vulgar for Woking and the rest of you overheated lusty pervs:

It was 38 in the shade at 8:30 last night. And up to 40 by Thursday. I'm going in the pool.
Love from La Belle France.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime. (Mark Twain)

Similar temperatures here in Cyprus. The thing is though that in countries like this they have the facilities to deal with it such as A/C in houses etc. Just off to brave the heat for a dip in the pool....

Quite right, you lucky b'stards. To make things worse, us chaps can't adopt the familiar cooling down sitting position any longer.
Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Me too, bought it the tail end of last summer, had to wait weeks to get it delivered. My bedroom in my house is on the third floor and with it being newish and well insulated it gets absolutely unbearable in weather like this so like you I'm thinking it's one of the best things I've bought. Not quite as good as properly installed air con but the next best thing.
Do you have an attic gents? You may not be able to find / install a/c, but if you fit a powerful fan to pull the air out of that roof space, you’ll note a considerable change in house temp.

Now the whole house is covered in dust.

The UK cannot cope with heat. I commute around 1 hour each way for work and journeys were messed up the last two nights. When you go into a shop and want a cold drink the drinks are never usually that cold. I was in Israel and the temperatures were regularly around 40 degrees C when i was there. Shops sell cold bottles of water and everyone carries them around. Also may hotel which was a basic one as hotels very expensive there has amazingly powerful air conditioning.

I'm not that much of a lager man, but on a day like today etc. Why is it never cold enough? As RM points out, it is often chilled to within a degree of freezing in hot countries, which is what we need. Are publicans/bar owners being mean over here?
