google 'rip youtube video' and loads of options.

generally you give them the youtube url, click away a couple ads, and then you can download.

works for audio too.

I don't know if there is a better or easier way to do it, but I use:

SMPlayer + SMTube + uGet

For the record I used 4k video downloader, the free version, and it worked a treat.

Now I can continue uninterrupted with my, er, research.

This morning I tried to download a Google Talks video with SMTube + uGet which I normally use, and for once it didn't work (I got video without sound). I couldn't get youtube-dl-gui to work either.

I eventually downloaded it with JDownloader.

Joyoshare Screen Recorder supports more formats and can download videos from more sites in 1080p without latency and watermark. I usually use it to download online movies.
