Season start dates, historically 09:48 - Aug 3 with 875 viewsGloryHunter

Inspired by a comment after Clive's preview to look this up:
In 1967-68 - my first full season - the opening game was on 19th August. So we're two weeks earlier than that.
The following season, however - having been promoted to the First Division - it was 10th August, so today's game is only one week earlier (I'm pretty sure all four divisions will have kicked off on the same date).
In the 1970s & 1980s the opening games seem to have been moved progressively further back. In 1982-83, for example, it was 28th August.

All to accommodate international weekends.Football used to be a winter sport and used to be a summer game. Now the two overlap too much.

The 1966 World cup final was on the 30th July!

The season 66-67 started on the 20th August and the charity shield Liverpool v Everton was on the 13th August and all the players who had been in the final, just two weeks earlier and those in the squad played (Wilson, Ball, Hunt (scored the only goal), Byrne and Callaghan

The season 65-66 started on the 21st August and the league officially finished on the 7th May with the FA Cup final on the 14th but some games were outstanding and for example Man U finished after the cup final on the 19th May.

So not a lot of time of for those in the England squad that summer.
