Work 'til you're 75 19:11 - Aug 22 with 9501 viewscolinallcars

Suggested by a right wing think-tank the other day. I thought someone on here might have commented, so I've put it up. Depends on the sort of job. If heavy labouring it'd be work 'til you drop. Then there's the effect it would have on employment prospects for younger workers. Me, I wouldn't mind a few extra years, dunno about 75 though !

I think we're going to have to eliminate Clive_Anderson's unsustainable relatives for the public good.

Still as snidey as ever I see.

An article from 2005, when the pension age was raised to 67, how much money is being saved by having people pay in their N.I. and drop dead before seeing any reward from it. A lot of people seem to have forgotten that a pension is a deferred income that has been paid into, not a hand out benefit.

Since the welfare state was established, there has been an unprecedented spell when average life expectancy was rising about 3-4 months every year (much of it due to lower smoking), though it's now flattening out. I believe that people who got to 60 could only expect to live to 68 on average, and now it's 91. Add in the fact that investment returns are so low, and it's clear that the old arrangements are unsustainable. I wouldn't be surprised to see euthanasia pushed as a civic duty within a couple of decades.

Yeah it's completely unsustainable.

But the old promised themselves all this unrealistic free money, so those that were unborn at the time of these promises will just have to stump up the cash, despite no prospect of them having the same benefits themselves when the times comes.

Is that "ghost" ship still there? Silly question really, it's got to be.

If you are talking about the ship that is stuck on the rocks, the MV Demetrios II, I am looking at it now as it is right where I live. Been there since 1998 when the crew lost control of it in a storm. Never been salvaged as the crew's seafaring qualifications were all subsequently found to be forgeries so the insurance company refused to deal with the matter.

I'm not sure that's true. A lot of women never used to work once they got married and had kids whereas most do now.

My missus' gran has never worked and has been claiming and window's pension for over 50 years (100 next month). Her aunt retired at 50 on a giant pension from being a headmistress for one year for over 25 years so far.

This is all unsustainable.

That windows pension is costly. A bit of a pane really ! 🥴

Exactly right. And it's not a question of being "fair" to todays young workers really. How about being "fair" to the people who were told what age they would get their pensions and then only to find the government reneges on that a few years before it is due to be paid? How about a government honouring the commitments it has made to its own people? As I say, they could easily afford to pay those pensions if they didn't waste money in other areas, or potentially illegally using the money from the NI fund which pays those pensions to reduce the national debt as they have recently admitted they have done.

That's the one - gives me the proper Scooby Doo heebeegeebees. One of my sons is just back from Paphos - reckons the harbour area is the place to be. He's young though.

That b'stard pelican attacked my youngest when he was four.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

The UK average life expectancy is decreasing at the moment and has been on average since 2010.

Doesn't surprise me, what with the stress of two partners with children both having to work these days to put a roof over their head. Not to mention the increase in obesity.

But you take the point that life expectancy has increased since the pension age was set I hope.

Yes, they have done the harbour up in recent years - no doubt with money from the EU. It's a nice place now but not particularly for just the young, in fact they closed most of the nightclubs down a few years ago to stop any trouble. I think the Pelican restaurant has a couple of pelicans now - a few years ago when I was walking by there the next door restaurant owner picked one of them up and threw it into the harbour.

The rate of growth has certainly slowed down but overall life expectancy still growing until recently. Falling for some groups certainly.

I don’t think a set pension age helps to be honest but is not the major cause of reduced life. Poverty kills people and a being skint later in life causes stress and health problems and a quicker death.

I think it’s more down to standards in healthcare provision, rise in suicides, and drop in living conditions for many.

I think you all know me well enough to know where I’m going with this.

International comparisons are interesting. Many countries a bit longer than ours but some less. No surprise from the US, opioid deaths just the latest contributory factor, but surprise to see the Danes below us.

Life expectancy increasing is not restricted to the UK yet other countries in the world have not blatantly reneged on paying pensions to a specific group of people as the UK government has. In fact it is up to a country's government to keep on top of state pension arrangements and make plans accordingly - something successive governments in the UK failed to do despite the evidence of increased life expectancy over many years. Something else - very few people realise that the UK state pension is the lowest in the developed world. Even the Mexican state pension is higher than that paid by the UK. As I say, the UK government could afford to pay the pensions which were agree many years ago, but they simply choose not to.

Life is pointlessly stressful. Most jobs have a huge amount of busy work in them.

Two people working all hours to pay the mortgage on a small terraced house that was originally designed for the poor in Victorian times.

There really is no need to be flogging ourselves to death all the time.

Why is a slowing rate of growth of life expectancy necessarily indefensible? If smoking is the major reason, a slowdown would be inevitable. About 50% of adults smoked in the early 70s, and the number is below 15% now.

"unrealistic free money" are you being deliberately controversial to provoke arguments? 50 years of N.I. contributions to secure a deferred income payment was the deal brokered on pensions when these old people you seem to despise was enacted. They are receiving their own money back NOT having their lifestyle funded by the current generation. If the government back in the day hadn't stolen the N.I. contributions to pay off the National Debt then we could have all retired at 60 without any hardship to future generations. Please direct your ire at the appropriate target before making wild, inaccurate statements.

The grass is always greener.

Their life expectancy is going in the right direction and is a lot higher than most of the capitalist countries in the region, and the majority of US states.

That’s despite an illegal embargo from the US and EU including medical supplies.

🤷‍♂️

I’ll be going there next February so I’ll pass on your regards. Let’s not get into it here, we’ll save it until your retirement party presuming you are awake for it.

Ha ha I've got to admire your persistence Baz.

Their economy has completely collapsed despite having the highest oil reserves in the world. 90% of people live in poverty and they've lost on average 24lbs in weight due to lack of food.

Less determined men than you might begin to wonder whether their system is actually a good idea.

Can you post your sources for that? Preferably not Guido or Turning Point. The WHO perhaps?

Their system is fine, the vulnerability to embargos and Oil price manipulation isn’t.

Anyway let’s leave it there.
