Corbyn: Football clubs are ‘too important to be left in the hands of bad owners’
The Labour leader promises to empower fans over how their clubs are run

Jeremy Corbyn, Newcastle MP Chi Onwurah (centre right) and Labour Party chair Ian Lavery (centre left) meet NUFC Ashley Out supporters after his speech at the Newcastle City Hall
LABOUR leader Jeremy Corbyn is to call for football fans to be given a much greater say on how their clubs are run, promising that a Labour government would empower fans and communities and review football governance.
Football clubs are “too important to be left in the hands of bad owners,” Corbyn said at the weekend after meeting with Newcastle United Football Club fans campaigning against the club’s owner Mike Ashley.
“A football club is more than just a club, it is an institution at the heart of our communities. Clubs are part of the social fabric that binds us together.”
The Arsenal season ticket holder said “bad owners like Mike Ashley... put their business interests ahead of everything else, marginalise supporters and even put the financial security of clubs at risk.
“Sport must be run in the interests of those who participate in it, follow it and love it, not just for the privileged and wealthy few.
“We will ensure that supporters have a say over how their club is run and review how fans can have more of a say about how all of our sporting bodies are run.”
Under the party’s new plans football supporters’ trusts would be able to purchase shares when clubs change hands and have the power to appoint, and fire, at least two members of a club’s board of directors.
Labour says it has also pledged to review fan participation in sports governance at all levels, and ensure that the Premier League invests 5 per cent of the income it receives for television rights into grassroots football to improve facilities and pitches and support the next generation of players and coaches.
Corbyn also called on football clubs to guarantee to pay their staff the living wage, ban zero-hours contracts and improve access provision for disabled sports fans.
The party’s plans also include cracking down on ticket-tout websites which vastly inflated match day prices, and implement the consumer protection measures outlined in the 2016 Waterson Review.
Women’s sporting events, including the Women’s Football World, will be added to the list of key sporting events to be broadcast free-to-air, the party said.
Labour’s Community Organising Unit is currently working with Newcastle United Football Club fans to organise against billionaire owner Mike Ashley, with thousands of fans boycotting the club’s games in protest against the greedy billionaire.

He's an interesting one, mr Corbyn.

Half of me would have him shot as a traitor to Britain, the other thinks he's the only decent one amongst them.

Works fine in Germany. They still pay players six figure weekly salaries.

Is Mike Ashley really that bad?

Newcastle seem to be run properly, actually making a profit of £18m last season and not in loads of debt like 90% of league teams.

They just beat Man Utd as well.

Is that the same Bundesliga that Bayern Munich has won for the last six years? There's some good stuff in the German system but if you want to make the game 'democratic' in terms of the total enjoyment that fans get from supporting a team for their whole lives, then I think that something far more radical is required. Corbyn isn't particularly radical other than having a generally speaking radical outlook - the specifics are pretty much 'same old', unexciting and unoriginal.

Keeping it to football though, at least it's some sort of start on what needs to be done. It's just a shame that the political class doesn't possess the weight of intellect to unravel the range and complexity of the problems with our game.

Don't worry - Judge Rinder will probably put it to the sword if it ever looked like getting off the ground.

Not sure why the answer to everything in this country is always along the lines of, "well they do it in Germany."

Maybe that's the reason the German league is nowhere near as big/internationally renowned/lucrative as the Premier League. Seems to me another classic case of Corbyn's cut of your nose to spite your face policies.

It also ignores the fact that, like it or not, these are private businesses. It is absolutely terrifying that any potential government could be talking of taking control of private enterprise like this.

I do like the investment in grass-roots football bit, though.

not sure anyone is tnat bothered about our top league being big/internationally renowned/lucrative.
Think we'd all settle for cheaper prices, less ridiculous wages, safe standing, good beer, integrated transport-and-ticket deals and all the other things German clubs in general do a million times better than we do.

Bare bones.

don't tell me we're stanning for Mike Ashley in this thread

if we had let go of a Champions League winning manager for nothing after years of performing above par, with what you have to concede is one of the weakest squads in the Premier League, just because the manager wanted a bit more money to try win a cup or something then you'd be furious. You'd be even more furious if we then hired a man with a very spotty record in the Premier League based primarily on the fact he's so desperate to manage the club he'd wipe the owners bum for him. The only reason they're banking that Premier League money is because of Benitez.

Refusing to buy Rondon because he's 29 then buying an unknown quantity in Joelinton for £40m just because he's younger and potentially has resale value is ridiculous. They'd have easily made back what they paid West Brom for Rondon if they just stayed up another season. There's being prudent and then there's running Newcastle like they're Burnley which they emphatically aren't. plus Ashley is c*nt.

and we'd honestly beat Man Utd right now

Yeah that bloody small fry, non-internationally renowned Bundesliga that's originally produced the players and coaches that have won the World Cup three times since England last did...

Premier League football clubs are not in any recognisable sense 'businesses'. Bar the big 6, the Sky money skews turnovers massively. This accounts for 80-90% of turnover for teams like Crystal Palace, Watford and Bournemouth. The latter two are being propped up by colossal loans from their owners.

In the accounts for the year up to 30th June 2018, Watford made a loss of £32m despite having the lowest wage bill in the division (was still £86m). In what way is that sustainable? They were fortunate that the following season they sold Richarlison for £40m but that isn't going to happen every season.

Also the same league that happens to be one of the least competitive in existence. Sport is supposed to be entertaining. I'll watch the Premier League any day over the Bundesliga, irrelevant of who it's produced (each to their own though!).

Football clubs are privately owned enterprises. That they are loss-making doesn't change that.

Regarding all of Antti's points, yes they're all great, and can all be achieved without Jeremy Corbyn getting involved.

Hasn't Boris already nationalised West Ham? Only it's the modern version of nationalisation where the state pays for everything and the owners keep the profits.

Such is the fearsome power of light social democratic reform, it's enemies will bend themselves into hitherto unimaginable contortions just to disagree with anything Corbyn says.
