Looks as though our boiler is on its last legs.

Any recommendations on new boilers, and who to get them from, and instillation?

British Gas are coming out to us, but not until next Sunday, even though we have a monthly service plan with them. Looking to bin the tosspots.

Look at Checkatrade, make sure they are Gas Safe registered.
The gas board will be 25% to 30% more expensive than a local trader even with their interest free offer.
Go for a good name, Worcester Bosch or Vaillant would be my go to.
Have you considered going for a combi?
After years of being put off I went for it a couple of years ago when my 30 year old boiler packed up.
I’ve been in the heating industry for 40 years although on the commercial side so ask away.

We had a Gloworm which didn't even last 7 years, even with a maintenance contract. A boyfriend of one my nieces who was a Corgi registered gas fitter recommended getting either a Vaillant or a Worcester boiler. We went with the Vaillant and it hasn't been a bit of trouble in over ten years. I would suggest getting one that is slightly over specced for your needs so it never comes under any real heavy workload.

The grass is always greener.

British Gas quoted us over 4k . I have a contract with them and TBF it has been ok , once had 2 guys fixing ours at 6pm on Christmas Eve .
My Inlaws had a local Gas safe registered guy change theirs for 1800 /

I play Golf with a plumber who says look for the Corgi/Gas safe registration No . the lower the better as they have been at it the longest ...

Hi Snipper.
I don’t post but am always on this site.
Htg engineer for a very long time both domestic and commercial.
Boilers to go for Vaillant Worcester Bosch and Ideal get any of these with their own system filter and if you shop around you can get up to a ten year parts and labour and warranty.
That’s about the design life span of appliances these days so pretty dam good.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
Pat.

Mark, I had a similar problem with our Potterton Profile for the last few days. I called Baxi Customer Services and they quoted £381 over the phone before even looking at the thing !!!!

I thought phuck that, I tinkered about for 20 minutes and got the heating working again.

Worcester Bosch are the Rolls Royce of boilers. Don't bother with anything else. Not sure British Gas sell them though.

Had our Combi Worcester Bosch installed last year its been great. Guy I found on Checkatrade who has since fitted my old man's house with one too. Cannot fault it. Also go for the Hive thermostat, brilliant smart system you can control remotely.

How much did it cost from start to finish mate?

It definitely sounds the way to go.

Can't believe i'm adding to this thread but we had a new Keston and had endless trouble with it from day 1. After 18 months of non-stop malfunctions, our plumber sold us a 5 year old Worcester Bosch and 8 years on not a peep of bother.

Mark just move in with Chris seems to me like he can tinker with boilers and get them sorted.
Or get Chris to move in with you.

Without wishing to tempt fate, we've never had any issues with our Worcester Bosch boiler. Had one installed in our old place too, and that ran without any problems. Both plumbers highly recommended them as well.
