currys amazon 20:16 - Nov 5 with 5272 views | enfieldargh | Needed to buy a cheap tv for one of my kids bedrooms. Went on Currys website found a good priced 43" was about to order it suddenly a banner appears top of screen from Amazon Prime offering same TV at the same price saying its knocked down from £399 to £249, same price as Currys . Currys wanted £10 to deliver, Amazon its free delivery. So question is are Amazon & Curries pat of the same group or have Amazon just hijacked a Currys purchase?

currys amazon on 13:23 - Nov 6 with 1624 views | Toast_R | They don't help themselves though do they? Customer service on shop floors in the UK is absolutely shocking in most parts. You go to a Currys, Sports Direct or even Wickes these days and they lazy bastards in the store just refer you to their websites if you want something. So yeah, while I do that I'll also shop around online to check if I can get it cheaper. The only thing the high street has over the internet now is the personal service they can give you but sadly they just can't be bothered to put in the yards. Currys PC World are a shocker, the staff if you are lucky enough to find someone don't even know their products and talk a lot of bollocks. Go online and you have pages of reviews and solutions from consumers who own the products which are far more enlightening. [Post edited 6 Nov 2019 13:30]

I had a similar experience in Wickes last Sunday. Lazy b'stard wouldn't show me where what I couldn't find was - "If it isn't there, it's probably sold out" I replied that I didn't know where to look ie I'm asking for a small bit of help. He wouldn't budge, the fecker.

Yeah they are f*cking toss mate, one I "used" to go to I was after some slabs for the patio, as soon I asked where the slabs were it was a case of "Just go online mate and do click and collect". Mainly use B&Q now as at least they f*cking stock stuff even if they are a bit pricier. They also employ a lot of older men and women who I find are far more helpful than the younger generation who haven't a clue how to engage with customers and just use their default answer of "If you can't see it it's out of stock - try the website" when all you're after is a bag of screws. currys amazon on 14:15 - Nov 6 with 1539 views | RangersDave | Back in the day, i used to work in B&Q , this was the early 80's. We were staffed correctly, always a minimum of 3-4 staff per department. We used to take a pride in serving, making sure the customer got what he/she wanted and trying to ensure a great experience for them. At that time B&Q cared, and made sure their staff did too. They once held a competition for the top 3 staff in store in each region. top prize was new york on concorde and back on QE2. i didnt win, but worked my knackers off to have a chance, often working extra hours etc. You wont find any of that nowadays.

Wickes are truly shocking! Problem is that in order to be price competitive nobody trains their staff anymore. They’re only there to run the tills and stock the shelves and they can’t even do that properly half the time. I personally won’t use Amazon after I got stung with their Amazon Prime payment without authorising it. It’s happened to almost everyone I know. I wouldn’t accept it from a physical shop and I won’t accept it from Amazon. I got most of the money back but not the 3 months I was unknowingly subscribing. I was offered no real apology. I’ve decided that if they’re going to make my life so difficult and force me into corners all the time then I’m going to manage without and live a simpler life. Which suits me just fine

currys amazon on 22:36 - Nov 5 by stevec | If that’s as it sounds then it’s quite scary. Basically means behemoths putting even the largest competitors out of business and heaven help small businesses. Benefits consumers in the short term but we are heading towards control of the economy by a relative handful of companies, largely automated, and I’m struggling to understand how 8 billion people fit into that scenario. Soon the only growth industry will be food banks. |
As the fundamental antagonism in capitalist society is between capital and labour it sometimes gets overlooked that capitalism smashes capitalists. Amazon is proving particularly adept at pulverising the petite bourgeoisie.

currys amazon on 15:24 - Nov 6 with 1476 views | TacticalR | A couple of articles from Tony Norfield (former head of foreign exchange at a European bank) about Amazon. Neither are a particularly easy read. In the first article from 2017 Norfield discusses Amazon's ambition to become the market. He also looks at how Amazon was able to use its domestic base in the US to fund loss-making overseas operations. His figures from 2016 also show that Amazon was already getting significant revenue from selling cloud computing (Amazon Web Services) to other capitalist businesses. That Amazon Web Services income has risen significantly as shown in the second 2018 article. Amazon: Becoming the Market (2017) https://economicsofimperialism.blogspot.com/2017/07/amazon-becoming-market.html I agree with this point in his second article: 'Being more productive is a good thing, or at least it should be. It means producing with fewer resources — less time spent working, travelling or waiting to get the same output, using raw materials and other inputs more efficiently, and so on. In the framework of the capitalist market, however, this can have all kinds of bad repercussions. Rather than society being able to be better fed, in better health, with more leisure and time to enjoy life, the burden of work for some increases while others are made unemployed, lives are disrupted and the benefits of productivity go to a few.' This paradox cannot be resolved within the existing social system. He also raises some interesting questions about the costs incurred by Amazon. 'It would be difficult for a new entrant into this market to outcompete the Amazon machine. Yet the rising ratio of costs to net sales revenues raises questions about how productive these centres really are. Is their efficiency exaggerated in the minds of those who only see the robots, the disciplined workforce and the smooth running system, and who ignore what all this costs? One reason for the increase in costs compared to sales revenues is due to Amazon opening lots of extra fulfilment centres worldwide — see the information on these centres here. This will incur costs before they are fully operational and generating extra sales. Another reason lies in the distinction that must be made between a physical, productive efficiency and the value of the goods delivered. Unfortunately, Amazon provides only sporadic details on this topic, as on others, so a view cannot be properly verified from data in their accounts. Nevertheless, the information available suggests both that the volume of throughput at fulfilment centres — the number of items, parcels, etc, per day — has risen sharply, and that the cost per item or parcel has fallen steadily. So, physical productivity has increased, as one would have expected. That has not been translated into higher net sales revenues when measured against the costs of these centres, not only because of the rapid expansion in the number of these centres, but also because Amazon has reduced the average prices of the goods to its customers. This might seem a strange thing for a capitalist company to do, but it is an explicit part of Amazon’s strategy of building volume and increasing its share of the market.' Even smart TVs (TVs!) leak your personal data back so you can be targeted. Anything labelled as "smart" is vulnerable. OK, that may sound paranoid but we are seeing cyber attacks on critical infrastructure, like power networks. The bank accounts of casino users were hacked via an internet connected thermometer in a fishtank. That's why there is no way I am having a smart meter and why I bought the non-networked version of the charger for my electric car. |
For me, you might as well swap the word 'smart' with 'surveillance'. [Post edited 7 Nov 2019 8:09]

Hisense TV John Lewis latest model £299. Good reviews so price seemed a no brainer. Sadly I cant get out the house this week and although life would easily continue without a TV just wanted to get it done On sale at many outlets at varying prices. OK kids room is a bit of an old habit, sh'es 21 now and moved to a bigger bedroom in the house(no we dont have that many and apologise to all of you who live in shoebox in middle of road) The 7.99 is shared cost between 4 of us not that I need to justify it. As for internet shopping sadly many of us do it as its become a simple transaction, especially for people like me who detest shopping and often fall foul of council parking laws. I'm wondering how long it will be before actual retail floor shopworkers are outnumbered by their RDC counterparts, whose jobs are already under threat from robot style order pickers .

yes but £50 more expensive and cant price match it as its the older model by a few weeks. TV's models constantly change all the time. Expensive items yes John Lewis everytime last TV we had in that room was a managers special from Currys 14 years ago. I'm hoping that when I watch the highlights on Quest we wont let in any goals.....which will probably be down to buying a duff telly as opposed to a duff defence

For the cheap end range under £500, they are rated pretty high on AV Forum. As good as Samsung. From AV 2018 (40-43") Don't knock TVs at this price range. They are good enough for most people and especially suited for those wanting the best picture quality for non-HDR content such as regular broadcast TV, catchup TV, FHD Blu-Rays, and the non-HDR games consoles. If you are a basic user with a limited budget and you don't need all the bells or whistles these TVs are 90% as good as the higher-end ones with most content. 1.Hisense A6xxx Series - You can find these for as little as £300 and there is little reason to spend more at this size. 2.Samsung NU71xx series - The next best value to the Hisense. 3. Samsung NU74xx series - Builds on the NU70xx model with a wide color gamut. Warning IPS variants of the 43" spotted, beware. If you do end up with a VA panel it is good value compared to the others. *New* - possible way to tell panel type pre-purchase. Thanks too @desinho [Post edited 7 Nov 2019 9:03]

In similar vein, a local pub to me was turned into an oopsy little gastro pub and was including canopies on the menu - handy in the rain I suppose.
