Nearly on subject, I went to the Whiskey Live event in Dublin last weekend. Great fun, would thoroughly recommend a future visit for any whiskey/whisky enthusiasts. Really nice relaxed informal atmosphere where you can talk to the distillers, collectors, investors, connoisseurs and novices alike.
Already planning a visit for next year's event.

The most expensive is a forty-year-old Bowmore, it's listed at CDN$1,350.00 for a single ounce. I asked the sommelier how many they sell, he replied about three a year. Mostly to groups, apparently, who club together so that each can take a sip. I asked how much it would cost to sniff the cork but he wouldn't let me.
Oh and, as I understand it, whisky matures in the cask not the bottle so it might not matter much that the bottle is old.

A few years back in a bar in Dingle, and looking for any whiskeys i might not have tried before, I noticed a bottle of Dungourney. One shot for fifty euros. And fifty cents!! Which I thought was a bit cheeky.
Rare enough though, a bottle will normally go at auction for around Eur 700.

What's the difference?
£50 is the most I've paid for a bottle of 'Silver select' back in about 2001.
It's the closest to what cowboys used to drink according to the tourguide at JD's in Lynchberg.
Smooth and deadly.
Been building up a nice collection of Irish whiskeys over the last year or so, a few as investment, but mainly to drink over time. Normally pay anywhere between £70 and £100 for the bottles I intend to drink.
At the Whiskey Live event in Dublin a few weekends back, I got to try Dunville's 18 Year old Single Malt, which retails about Eur 700, and Glendalough's 17 and 25 year old single malts, which will be in the super premium range once released.
For me, the enjoyment is trying new whiskeys for the first time, no matter the price. The proliferation of new Irish whiskey distilleries are producing some really innovative and different tasting whiskeys, and I suspect given another 10/15 years, the variety of tastes and types of whiskeys being produced will have changed quite substantially.

Should any of you be travelling to the north coast of Northern Ireland, the Bushmills distillery tour is a great way of passing a few hours, with plenty of sampling at the end. Edit: You can also tour the Tayto crisp factory. What a day.
