Ever fallen out of love with someone you shouldn’t have fallen in love with 22:30 - May 22 with 2527 viewsqprxtc

Queens Park Rangers. Still love them but the fire ain’t burning any forests of brain cells that it did even twenty years ago.

From eight to about forty one ish, Rangers were the be all and end all. Totally obsessed. Ruined any chance of relationships, it was all I really cared about (alongside music and Guinness).

I missed maybe five games home and away between 1996 and 2004. At the end of every season I was absolutely knackered. I’d added another few stone to my frame and was in debt beyond my means and maxed out on three credit cards.

Once I stopped my away season ticket and got hitched, I stopped memorising all about Rangers. Stopped caring about that that I can’t change no matter if I’m there or not or how loud I shout.

I still love Rangers. But I don’t miss them right now and I’m not sure I’m worried if they come back or not.

for me the whole set up now is different...long gone are the days of...
paying in on the turnstile, our lovely chequered programmes, match of the day, the big match. evening standard, mud on the pitch, fun on the terraces, no escorts on away games only adrenelin, no var, minute silence probably once a season, 1 to 11 on shirts, drinking your pint outside the pub, stewards who support our team, on the pitch last home game, monkey nuts, fooball specials, daphne,

Jumpers for goal posts.
I agree with all of the above. Funny how you lose them one by one without realising. I would just add, 3:00 PM Saturday k.o.

It's natural to find QPR less important as we get older and as I said in my first post, I sometimes look at those in their 40s and above and for who QPR is more than a football team and feel sorry for them.

In fact, surely having the same love for a football team at such an age as you did as a child is surely a sign that you must have wasted life to some extent?

I still want us to win but if we don't I'm not going to let it ruin my day or life.

I very much get your point, and if your football club means more to you than your wife or kids there's something wrong with you IMO.

But.

As my kids are getting close to leaving home I'm reminded that the club are still there for me, always will be I hope, that every Saturday in the season at 3 p.m. (subject to the bastards at Sky) they'll be kicking off and I get a warm glow. Not like when I was a kid but then anyone of my age who's married knows that it's not the same as when you were 16 and in love for the first time either, but can still be as strong.

Children put things in perspective.

Still, every game we win means i'll be smiling all week, whereas losing always agitates me. The importance waxes and wanes, but it's still always high on my agenda, always will be i should imagine.

For me QPR is a nice pair of comfy slippers.

Loftus Road is a place I go to to escape real life and sit back, relax and more often than not think about days gone by.

I still love going and miss it at the moment, but there are far more important things in my life now and it isn't important to me: not just as much as it used to be but at all.

There are moments when it, of course, raises more than a smile but, and I hope this makes sense, even on those days I'm only really a QPR fan when in the stadium and just like the club's failures don't get me down, the limited success we enjoy doesn't leave me on cloud 9 for hours or weeks either.

To some this may seem like I am wasting my time and money but l, perhaps naturally, think this is a healthy way to engage with a football team compared to how others do. QPR for me provides the perfect opportunity to forget about work, life, the wife and all those other things that can grind us down. A pressure valve to press now and then. Of course I'd sure miss them if they weren't there but here comes the heresy... if we did go out of business I'd buy myself a season ticket elsewhere and although it wouldn't be exactly the same and I'd be upset about the passing of the club and our history , it'd still provide the escapism and I'd move on.

'In fact, surely having the same love for a football team at such an age as you did as a child is surely a sign that you must have wasted life to some extent?'

What a lovely thing to say.

I think the majority of people probably do find football means less as they get older, as 'real life' takes over. I remember my English teacher saying he used to be on the terraces at his club and never thought he'd change, but he did. And I thought, 'I won't!'. To some extent, I haven't, this Covid break will be the longest I haven't been to football in over 40 years, since I was essentially a toddler (I was a regular from the age of two). To another extent, I have in that I have mellowed and can take the rough with the smooth and don't get quite so furious as others when we don't win every single game. I still love going though, and miss it terrible. Yes, it's changed, but the pleasure this season in seeing BOS's development, Eze's skill, the emergence of Chair has been great.

It's an odd subject for a forum, though.

Bare bones.

Fact eh? Other than music, what else can raise the spirits and tug at the emotional heartstrings the way football does?

The grass is always greener.

This is an interesting topic, there's a guy I know down at LR who's in his early 50s, no wife/kids etc, and QPR is his whole life. Literally. I do sometimes wonder if he is lonely for the 6 days of the week he's not at QPR but thats his choice so I can't judge.

I can certainly agree with those who say they wane a bit as they get older.

Like many of you - in my childhood/teen years my love for QPR was intense - I'd know everything about us, our results (in fact even now I could still remember probably 95% of our results in the 03/04 season!) other teams, their players, how the division was faring etc...

Then as you get older other stuff happens in life that takes you away from that.

I still love QPR as much as ever, but again as others have alluded to with the first teenage love analogy, rather than it being obsessive and all consuming its more of a mature, balanced, steady love.

When I'm at Loftus Road on a Saturday/Tuesday I'm as fanatic as I ever was, but outside of that I'm quite happy to put QPR back in its box until the next time. Being married I only tend to go to 1 away game a year now generally (Forest being my current staple of choice being Leicester based...) which I'm quite happy with - for me right now I don't want every Saturday to be football day - but I do still get jittery between 3 and 5 (or whatever 2 hour period QPR are playing in...) when I'm not there and am anxiously looking at the score awaiting updates. But again, as soon as the score is final its either "Yay", "Grr" or "That'll do" and then back to normal life.

I am missing QPR at the moment, but really just the same as I do across any close season summer months. Its just a bit longer this time. And could be longer yet if we're not back til 2021!

I've had my season ticket in Ellerslie Road since I was 9 (so 21 years now, gulp) and I want to have it as long as I can, though I accept that might have to change once children come along. Will cross that bridge when I get to it!

I still love it as my youngest son has really, really got the bug. Of course it’s not the same as when I were a lad etc - what a change this season when we attack and can expect to score.

My son bought a QPR mug with the teletext print out of Zamora Day on it and handed it to his colleague who was down from Derby for the day to help out. He didn’t like it!

Not sure I really get why people put these posts on a QPR forum. They keep coming up every few months. What do you want to say? That you have a life and the rest of us are saddos. Or do you want company in no longer missing the footy.

I have a family, friends, a job I love, other hobbies. But I still really miss the football. Not just the matches but going up with the family, sharing experiences, meeting up with the people you only see at matches but share a bit of your life with who you'd never probably meet otherwise. I miss seeing our young players like BOS, Chair, Dom Ball, Eze etc grow and develop. I miss the release of emotion from shouting at the ref or when we score.

I miss Brian's in-match commentaries. Clive and Antti's match reports. I miss Andy Sinton's yeeesssss when we score. I even miss the post-match arguments on here. Football doesn't isolate me, it connects me in other ways to people I'd never encounter elsewhere. Is it really just me?

It’s not what it used to be but it’s still one of the greatest pleasures in life on those rare moments it goes right.

As Danny Dyer once said “what else you gonna do on a Saturday? Stay in wnking off to Pop Idols?”

It will also be the longest time I've not been to a football match though not the longest time without QPR which I explained on another thread.

I'm not saying if you still go after 30/40 years you've wasted life. Far from it.

What I mean is those in their 30s and above who have little beyond QPR in their lives: They go to most games home and away, their only friends are QPR fans, they may have met their partners at QPR, the majority of their social media engagement is QPR related... Etc, etc.

Each to their own, of course, and they're doing no harm to anyone, but I can't help but look at them and wonder if they realise how limited they have made their lives and what they have missed out on because of a football team.

Yeah, fair enough. All good points.

I’m in too deep into this to not give a shit really. I’ll never be able to walk away and I talk bollocks when I’m pissed. Well, sober too.

Today, I love Rangers and can’t wait to see the old gits again. Tomorrow may be different.

But it’s still a discussion about Rangers on a QPR message board innit.

Time for more beer.
