Had a thought.
At some stage, maybe sooner than I though - possibly this year - we might be allowed back to the KPFS.

Great chance for the club here to do something: face masks. I suspect they will be mandatory at least at first. So how about a range of QPR face masks which people can buy in advance or maybe they hand out for free, or maybe if you're waiving your refund for games we won't be allowed to go to, you get a free one? Who wouldn't want a nice QPR face mask? We'd look so cool! Like those cool Palace Ultra dudes!

Please pass this on to Lee Hoos.

Thanks

Apparently you can get infected through your eyes too.

I recommend blind folds for all the opposition at Loftus Rd.

Now I’m getting my hopes up! Any reason why you think we’ll be allowed back sooner rather than later?

I’d all but accepted that going to football would be unlikely until next year or possibly until a vaccine is sorted (could be sooner). Hope I’m wrong.

Maggie would’ve loved it,identity masks for football fans.
All the hooligans can have their own designer masks made by Burberry and stone island. No more away fans sneaking in the home stands with a club face mask on.
Would there be an away mask too?And the 3rd kit too in case of a colour clash?

Happy face masks. Bored face masks. Angry face masks. There's a lot of potential here.

I'm starting to have this view - there will be no vaccine. Everyone talked about it early on, but the fact is, we've never properly eradicated any disease other than smallpox, and a real vaccine within a year is very unlikely - it may never happen. There's no vaccine for HIV, for example. So we're going to have to start finding new ways to live with it, because it's going to be here for years.
In Denmark, they've re-opened stuff and think a bounce back at this stage is unlikely. We're probably a month behind them. No one knows what will happen with this disease - but we will have to find ways of living with it and if you start to accept no magical cure will appear next spring, then you have to start to think about ways of making the old normal possible again without it.

Bare bones.

Think you are absolutely right with so many people losing and about to lose their jobs we need to stop fussing about the government's handling of everything and start to get life moving again before we get any deeper into recession.

If they do discover a vaccine it will be hard to judge it's effectiveness if there isn't enough virus circulating.

Masks are an aide. Any barrier has got to be better than none. They should offer protection against other illnesses such as cold and flu as well.

Vaccines have been found for many diseases, Antti, not just smallpox. It might take a while for this one but there is a massive worldwide effort and optimism is high.

Don't think we're going back inside Loftus Road until January at the earliest to be honest and by then so many people would have caught the virus that the infamous 'herd immunity' will have taken hold and we won't require masks.

If we get the go-ahead to attend games again, I'll be there whether they make it compulsory to wear a mask, goggles, full hazmat suit or a pink fairy unicorn outfit with a waxwork of the Queen on top.

Absolutely - but smallpox is the only human disease we have eradicated.
There are vaccines for many diseases that still kill people all over the world every year.
The point is not necessarily whether there will be a vaccine or not - even if one was made in 12 months time, the virus will still be circulating for years. That's the point.

Oh, I agree. Absolutely. But if we have a vaccine then COVID-19 may not be eradicated but it will join the likes of mumps, polio, measles etc as ones we have herd immunity from through vaccines.

Encouraging news being quoted by Clive on the Corona thread about reduced risk from second wave. Fingers crossed.

If anyone wants the details then I recommend the chapter on vaccines in Osterholm's book.

One of the points he makes is that even once created, vaccines are difficult to reproduce:

'Vaccines are not like other kinds of drugs, and comparatively speaking, they are hard to make. The production of the Lipitor you take for your cholesterol, the Metformin you take for diabetes, the Prozac you take for depression, or the Viagra you take for erectile dysfunction–all maintenance drugs of one kind or another–can be likened to building a Chevrolet on a General Motors assembly line. Production of a vaccine, on the other hand–particularly a new vaccine–is more like growing lettuce in a field in California. By the time the Chevy gets to your garage or the lettuce gets to your table, each is going to be pretty much what you expected. But the process for manufacturing the car is a lot more predictable, repeatable, and scalable than the process for growing lettuce, which is subject to weather, ground conditions, drought or flood, insects, and any plant-based diseases that happen to be circulating in the area.

What we’re talking about is the difference between a chemical agent and an essentially biologic agent; that is, chemical synthesis versus biological growth. For decades our vaccines have grown in cell cultures, in eggs, or on the skin of animals such as calves. This is a time-consuming process with a number of difficult-to-control manufacturing variables. And most of the vaccine production for influenza requires a whole lot of chickens laying a whole lot of eggs. The more modern cell culture technology, in which a seed virus is introduced into an existing cell line and grown in capacity in a fermenter, is faster and more efficient, but it’s still a biologic process.'

Another is that pharmaceutical companies are wary because they might not get their money back. They didn't get their money back on vaccine research on SARS in 2003 because once SARS died down government interest disappeared. The pharmaceutical companies would rather invest in drugs (especially drugs that you have to take for the rest of your life) that produce a steady income.

If the rate of infection drops and hopefully the death toll,it might be something that we will have to live with until/if they find a vaccine for it.
There will come a time when a few hundred deaths a year might mean that it’s an acceptable number to ensure we can get back to anything like normal again.

I’m surprised and disappointed by how few people in London wear masks when in public

The govt guidelines now specifically encourage people to wear masks in public. Even countries which have totally botched this require citizens to wear masks in shops, etc

I really struggle to understand why so few people wear masks. They are now pretty widely available, so the argument re availability is not particularly persuasive

Totally agree. Every time I go to the supermarket I’m surprised at how few people are wearing masks. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Work colleague is constantly moaning about lockdown yet any mention of wearing a mask and he goes off on one about civil liberties. This is part of the problem. Basically some people just want a reason to moan.
