I bow to your greater squad knowledge but IMO he is still not consistent enough for this level . Great today though .....

Delighted for him.

Great call by Warburton to make the change. If he didn't recall Lumley for today then he would have effectively written off his career and worth to us.

I thought he was commanding from the off.

Would you say he's a confidence keeper?

The catch from the lofted free kick near the end was excellent. The whole back 3/5 also did a great job defending the lead .

He did well today. Best keeper at the club...? Jury is still out.

MW made a good decision today, Kelly hasn't been great since the restart. Good to have competition for places.

Dieng must be looking forward to September too

Ted,

I coach goalies. I also coach outfield players. But goalies is where I started, and it's what I love.

Lumley's career was on the line today. Huge strength. Huge.

I'm not sure he was ever the same keeper after he got his face rearranged up at Villa last season. In my view it affected him and he probably needed some professional psychological counselling to get him through it. He seemed to need a period away from the pressure of playing weekly, and hopefully the break he's had will have helped him.

This is a message I sent to my Goalies WhatsApp group.

"Today was a great day.

Joe Lumley is a goalkeeper.
He's tall, rangy, popular, loud and incredibly talented.
His backs love him.
Released by Spurs at 15.
Signed by my Rangers (QPR - learn to love them).
When Rangers sold Alex Smithies to Cardiff for £4m plus add-ons, Joe became our No. 1.
He was 23.
He was impressive immediately.
There was talk of him representing his Country.
Huge career ahead of him.
New manager.
New tactics.
New goalie coach.
Alamo at the back.
A couple got past him.
He made mistakes.
Dropped.
Today Joe got recalled.
Clean sheet.
And you knew it from the off.

Today was a great day."

I don;t know either.

Only Joe and his coaches know that, I suppose.

Respect where it's due, but still a lot to prove in my opinion.

Concentration is a major one for him, especially with the crowd distracting him.

I watch the keepers closely too Brian, having played at a decent level myself for 20 years in that position. We are a strange breed.....confidence is critical. He pulled off a couple good saves early on and grew.

Hope it continues.

Today was the perfect situation for him over kelly.
Lumley is 6'5 according to comms and boro have a lot of big players. Kelly wouldn't have commanded his box as well as our Joe did. Boro may have targeted that. Well done MW.

Totally agree Brian. Very pleased for Lummers today. I hope he seizes his chance.

Pardon my naivety, but do any teams in the Championship use a goalkeeper by committee situation? Like plugging in one keeper for matches where he may play play better than the other (Lumley vs. taller teams) and vice versa (Kelly when a better distributor is needed)?

Think it’s what we may need to do if we enter next season with the same goalkeeping duo.

Pleased for Lumley getting his clean sheet. Still very young for a keeper and has had a rough time which has probably shattered his confidence. Hope he's grows from the experience and becomes a better keeper.

Three big saves in the first 20, and then utmost command of his box thereafter. So pleased for him. There's a keeper in there yet.

No.
But when was that World Cup game when the manager subbed the 'keeper just before the end of extra time in order to face the penalty shoot-out? Was it Italy?

It was Holland but can’t remember what year.

Didn’t a England manager rotate Shilton and Woods each game?
