Casting minds back 14 months, I wonder how in the cold light of day, this season does compare to people’s expectations.

I remember the doom and gloom on this website about the likelihood of a season of turgid trouble. There were plenty of threads with those long in the tooth woke posters expecting certain relegation; after all, how could the club shed playing staff and salary to such an extent to meet FFP restrictions and stand a fighting chance?

So, in the context of the major surgery, vast rebalancing of finance and the disruption to our momentum in March; and even in consideration of the crap that we have endured through July, on balance I am impressed that we have held our own this season and actually enjoyed most of it!

When you’re Hitting the breaks at 80mph to turn a juggernaut away from a cliff edge, the turning part takes the most effort (metaphorically speaking).

Well done Lee, Les and Mark - this season has been a strategic success. As Clive says, you can’t sell season tickets on a balance sheet, but the club has done the hard part - next year we can see the juggernaut driving in the right direction.

Overall Warburton has been exactly what we need. The post pandemic side is faltering badly but the pre-pandemic side was the best we've seen in ages, in terms of actually having an attacking playing style. Certainly the best football to watch since Warnock, if lacking in discipline in terms of defending.

Considering we had been binned as deadbeat last by pundits etc at the start of the season we have done very well. Had the lockdown not happened we may have had the scary prospect of flirting with the top 6. My only real concern is how think the current squad is and will be when the season finishes - and how little time, if we lose key players, there will be to bring new player in and through.

Next season will be a huge test given what he will have to work with. It may mean another change of style or the installation of some specialist coaches. We definitely need a defensive coach and even another who specialises in how the players work when they lose the ball. I watched a Southampton team that leaked goals like the Titanic earlier in the season against Man City and the organisation they had was really impressive. City not only couldn't get through them but Southampton broke on them at such pace when they won the ball back that it caused them real problems. I'd like to see our players hunting in packs next season. We did it earlier on this season but it has faded of late.

Never knowingly right.

I’ve enjoyed this season more than any since Warnock.
We’ve played some really attacking football at times

I feel the same. Add on the fact that it feels more like QPR too. A bit farcical, and with up and coming players making a name for themselves, blooding youngsters, a few geriatrics dotted about.

I'm genuinely intrigued to see how Warburton et al manage this summer's recruitment as last summer was a great success.

He’s worked wonders. Seems a great fit with Lee and Les. We can’t keep changing managers, so totally agree (and some!).

I do worry that his strategy of selling Eze and BOS for top dollar and buying wisely may have been disrupted by Covid; but equally he is a trader by nature, so I think he’ll fair better than most managers this summer in the market... he didn’t do badly with £50k last summer to be fair.

Brentford wasn’t built in a day. We need longevity.

good post.

wanted McLaren to do well but didn't quite have that cutting edge.

warburton seems to though, not quite there yet.

I predicted relegation, am more than happy with how the season has gone, bit of an anti climax post covid but you can’t blame the club for that.

Much better because I too feared relegation, I can see many of the issues such as the defensive side doesn't seem a particular thing Warburton thus far excels at, and it's stuff he and his team need to work on, few teams get promoted or do well conceding as many as we do.

IN terms of the post lockdown period well I always thought we'd do really well or really struggle as the uniqueness of the situation compares to nothing, in addition with people likely coming and going unless you really had something to fight for then I wondered how many would not quite put in the 100%.

W've lost players both during the season then after the June situation due to contracts, and the fact we clearly need the season over and focus entirely on next season, which I wonder to some degree is whats happening.

After the finish to last season I feared the worst for this season, and the huge turnover in playing staff led to it being very much an unknown.

Up to lockdown, the season had far, far exceeded my expectations. Post lockdown, its obviously been disappointing, but there are extenuating factors to take into account which I think is unfair to hammer the club for, despite our frustrations. It would be nice if we could string 7-8 points together though for the last 5 games and finish on a bit of a high. West Brom away excepted, we hardly have much to fear IMO (but then our opponents are probably looking at our form saying the same about us!)

The key really is approaching this summer, we can't float around the bottom half forever, you either need to start moving upwards or eventually you will sink to close to the drain and fall.

Turning around the juggernaut by the OP is a good analogy! Lets hope it doesnt get dragged back.
