Ronnie O'Sullivan on snooker today. Superbly funny.

This got me thinking. What sports do you think are utter nonsense?
I mean totally beyond your comprehension.

I'll start with American football. A lad throws a crooked ball between his legs to a lad who throws the ball to a lad that catches it. Everyone goes mental. For four hours.

Basketball 🏀
Run up the end, score
Run up the other end, score
Run up the end, score
Run up the other end, score
Run up the end, score
Run up the other end, score
Run up the end, score
Run up the other end, miss

Seems to be based more on losing than winning...

Lads I play cricket with are *obsessed* with NFL, and I just don't get it at all. Watched a lot of it when it was on C5 and I was an insomnia ridden student and it's simultaneously incoherent nonsense, and dead boring imo

I know quite a few fans on here but rugby is a head scratcher for me with their constant need to change rules to keep things safe and the way its so hard to spread the game.
I do occasionally enjoy a big match but very few and far between

Got to love Ronnie. Gives less of a fk with every year that passes.

Anyway, at the risk of starting World War III, cricket left me cold as a kid and does the same now. 22 blokes standing about in prissy white outfits like a load of failed crown green bowlers, staring into space between the one time every five minutes when something actually (briefly) happens.

And the lingo! Googlies. Dibbly-dobblies. Honestly, have some self respect.

F1.

Hamilton leads into the first corner... Hamilton wins.

Unless he gets a bubble in his tyre that’s about it.

When I was like 10 I absolutely loved F1. Would spend the whole Sunday watching it. Couple of years ago I was on a stag do in a remote cottage and there was one petrolhead there who insisted we go to local pub to watch a grand prix with our hangover roast. I ended up getting absolutely trollied again because I was bored out of my absolutely tree

Cricket and snooker are awesome and Ronnie is the sort of character that has been removed from football by w@nky media training.

Rugby though...loads of fat blokes writhing around in the mud, before one of them hoofs it through the posts from 50 yards.

Rugby league seems a bit better, but who's bright idea was it to divide a minority sport into two different versions? Idiots.

It's funny that you say "constant need to change rules to keep things safe". Every time I watch rugby (union) over the last decade or so it seems more and more brutal.

Bigger, fitter, stronger fitness freaks knocking shut out of each other. Completely devoid of the subtleties my (Welsh) pe teachers used to try to instill.

How long would JPR last these days?

Just me then that thinks O'Sullivan is a massive tit, but do enjoy snooker and have to concede the sport is all the better for a pantomime villain character like him.

As for sports I don't get, yeah NFL is the biggest one for me. Got mates who love it but I can't get into it at all. Does F1 count as a sport too? rubbish, utter rubbish.

Oh and before I forget, horse racing. nah, not for me.

In fairness they've only really changed the game for safety last season.

Most of rugby's watchability issues come from the fact the players and coaches are smarter than the law makers. So they make changes to make the game more exciting and somehow the staff come up with exploits to make it more turgid.

Classic example, in 2007 they wanted people to run the ball more so they made it harder to kick for touch for lineouts. But running the ball is statistically risky, so everyone just kicked the ball straight down the middle of the pitch as far as they could. The 2007 world cup was an appalling spectacle.

Rugby's become less of a spectacle the better the players have become. I first started going to Llanelli in the 1980s when it was all big, little, fat, skinny amateurs showing off amazing skills. Last year I went to two Top14 games in France, all the players were 20 stone, I think they broke through the defensive lines about four times across both the games. And the endless subs in case a tired defence might crack...

Rugby's split is inherently political. Abridged, the posh people who made the game were getting upset Welsh and especially Northern teams were getting good, so they enforced amateurism when those teams were working class and couldn't give up their jobs to train and play. Those clubs compensated players for missing work. The RFU fined them, so they split and started their own competition.

Similar incidents nearly happened in football too

I think that's sometimes true with football as well. Spain in the 2010 world cup were one of the best teams ever, but their games were completely devoid of any excitement. You knew they were going to win 1-0, just a question of when.

Rugby all day long. Ridiculously over complicated and impossible to work out when an infringement has occurred or what it actually was. All my mates watch regularly but when I ask them why the whistle has gone, they haven't got a clue! Scrums? What the fk is that all about? Give me good old simple football any day.

Good summary.

I've no particular interest in rugby league, but there was a book out a good few years back, "At The George", which covers the split from union, and the foundation of RL (at The George Hotel, Huddersfield).

You don't have to be a RL fan to enjoy what is an excellent read:

I often get really annoyed at myself that I prefer union to league cos the politics of union suck. Especially in France where the French union got the Vichy government to ban League cos the players were involved with trade unions and the previous socialist government. Basically decimated the game in France forever

A lot of sport requires effort to understand and then enjoy though. I used to dislike some of those mentioned above but devote a bit of time to them and you will usually get it. NFL is a good example - when you first see it it seems awful - so slow and then when there is a play everything goes 100 miles an hour and you cannot work out what just happened. But if you give it a bit of time there is a lot of clever stuff going on and a lot of the plays get pinched by rugby union and league. I still need someone to explain NFL and cricket to me but i enjoy watching them. Rugby i understand maybe 50% of the time which seems not too bad. Football watched live - what percentage of ref calls would you get right? Complexity is a lot of the beauty of sport.

Oh and Ronnie is incredible but a total knobend
