Eel Pie Records in Twickenham - delivers locally and sends if you are further afield. New and 2nd hand - very good standard classic vinyl not just ultra rare (and expensive) which I find some record stores on line tend to!

Banquet Records in Kingston is very good. I've had loads off them online during lockdown. A bloke I work with uses Diverse vinyl, which is run by a mate of his. Never used them but may be worth a look

I've had great experiences buying from Discogs. That community seems to hold itself more accountable to things like how they grade the vinyl, the sleeve, etc. I've found some great out-of-print/yet-to-be-reissued records there, occasionally at fantastic prices. |  | | |

Late 80s time I’d cycle down to Notting Hill Record and Tape Exchange on a Saturday morning where you could buy a closed box of random records for a fiver. Then wobble back down that fkin massive hill towards Acton to check them out.
A few months of doing this left me with piles of right old crap which I’ve still got lying around, but it was a proper treat back then and there was always a few gems in there (a white label of the Come Home remix by James always sticks in the mind).
I’ve spent lockdown getting the old records out of the attic and sorting them out and it’s been a real pleasure. Echo others about Discogs it’s brilliant and a very trustworthy community. Amazing what some of the old ones are worth, and it’s always the ones you don’t expect. A bog standard copy of Dummy by Portishead or an Orbital album is massively in demand. All the rare dance 12 inches I thought would be worth a fortune... aren’t. |  | | |

Late 2019 it was predicted that for 2020 new vinyl sales, which were already strong, would go up by an acceptable 5%.
It actually went up 40% and demand is so strong that as of end of 2020 we still had some 400,000 on catalogue back-order and the factories are already fully booked until July for new releases. It’s actually become a real problem but I guess a good problem to have.
Amazing how it’s turned around from a dead format (thanks to Woolies) to being incredibly strong again.
Keep buying them (but please also be patient if there are stock issues/delays). |  | | |

Discogs is an amazing catalog of music. And you will get lost going down the rabbit hole of aliases of artists you like the music of.
As for vinyl, it’s the only musical format that I release my own music on. Nothing comes close to holding a physical piece of your own art.

also worth browsing the facebook marketplace as some pretty random sales come up where people are moving/clearing houses. You might buy a job lot that is 80% rubbish but has a few nuggets and the cost is usually pretty low,

As others have stated Discogs is excellent for rarities. I've never had a problem with any purchase and have bought 12"s I've been told by record shops that I would never find.
For online shops Juno is the best. Extremely reliable and my tenants so please shop there!

Christ I remember the days of just walking into record shops and buying whoever's latest LP getting home and smelling inside the record sleeve before you played it, LP sleeves had a certain smell, gently putting the stylus arm down on the LP and just listening. (bliss).

imo the two best online shops are resident in brighton and norman's records in Manchester. for new releases. Rough Trade is a bit expensive but if you're in London the delivery is so quick
That said I have an indie bent.

As others have said, Discogs is great. I buy and sell a lot on there and it’s pretty honest. eBay on the other hand I would generally avoid for second hand stuff as the grading is hit and miss. It can be good for new stuff though.
Juno is excellent, really good service and fast delivery.

Echoing an earlier comment, I can’t stress how important a decent needle is. You’re effectively degrading the vinyl every time you play it, so it’s worth spending more to minimise the damage. Sadly I’ve knackered loads of records in the past through cheap needles. |  | | |

I've bought stuff from Discogs - good quality and a huge range but many of the sellers are overseas and charge a fortune for p&p.
Anyone living in the Barnes area has two vinyl shops, Olympic records opposite the old Olympic recording studio in Church Rd Barnes and Level Crossing Records which is, er, next to the level crossing in Mortlake.

Ah Discogs - been buying off of there for years but the last couple are a bit of a lottery - if only all these newcomers would know how to grade records correctly - M- coming through as VG or worse. Not an isolated instance - belong to a few forums on record collecting and the consensus is stick to who you know and don;' trust the grades of newbies. |  |
