Lockdown loan signing fun 22:44 - Jan 19 with 1925 viewsRSCOSWORTH

After today’s loan signing it got me to thinking about the number of impressive loan signings we’ve had at the club over the last 20 years or so, although sadly not too many recently. So to lighten up this period of lockdown I thought we could list all the loan successes we’ve had over the years.

There are two rules to this, firstly they must have had a successful loan period with us and two you can only suggest one player per post and can’t suggest another one until someone else has posted.

I’ll kick things off with one of my personal favourites...Neil Danns.

Looking forward to remembering some favourites that I’m sure I’ve forgotten about.

Shortest appearance probably Fumaca - crocked against City.

Played only part of the game, but would have been brilliant for the U's

Let me start with Birmingham City loaning us Will Packwood and a fateful day in Buckinghamshire on 29th November 2014.

To be fair, we were losing 4-0 to MK Dons when he received his marching orders on 67 minutes. The resultant penalty made five, and it was 6-0 in added time. Benik Adobe got a hat-trick, but our chief tormentor was an unknown Dele Alli.

Packwood’s Colchester United pitch time career lasted 67 minutes and he suffered an injury whilst conceding said penalty. Then after five loan appearances for Cheltenham, he exited the EFL to make nine appearances for the USA U23 XI. He had a trial with New England Revolution but never made an MLS appearance for anybody despite making the national team. All very odd. I could tell he was crap after a mere ten minutes.

Big Sam Walker. Another one of my personal favourites. Great performances that helped us stay up during two different loan periods.

Next Rekeil Pyke on loan from Huddersfield Town. Made 12 appearances for the U’s in 2017.

Was yellow carded when away at Crewe giving me an opportunity to scream “don’t give him your name Pyke”. Around 150 U’s fans and 3,000 Crewe seemed to appreciate the Dads Army humour. Currently with Shrewsbury, but has been injured since September. Let’s hope he will soon be back on parade.

Think some of you are redefining ‘success’ here. As no one has gone there yet, easy suggestion from me will be Jamie Cureton.

Michail Antonio. The one I rate as the best loan signing we ever made. Scored again for West Ham tonight.

Luke Garbutt. He looked far too good for us and the division we were in at the time. I genuinely thought he’d been sent to us by mistake. Surprised he didn’t go on to bigger and better things as he looked a real classy performer for someone so young.

Possibly a controversial one, but I thought the same about Isaiah Rankin when he came to us. In his appearances that I saw, his pace and trickery were breathtaking. I was surprised he didn’t go on to play consistently at a much higher level.

Back in the day, Tony Kelly. Looked a very good player in a very poor side.

One of my favourites was my name sake Graham Barrett.

On loan from Arsenal in the 2001—2002 season, he scored 4 goals from the wing in 20 appearances (according to Wiki).

I even sprayed my hair green for the "Go Green For Graham Day" at the end of the season!

Good call, forgot about Graham Barrett. I’m going to add Guy Branston - a solid but unglamorous player, but without whom we may not have made the play-off final

The one and only Roy McDonough of course. Ha Ha!

That would have to Steve Foley. I think he did it three times.

Definitely Steve Foley especially as he was my coach at Micky Cook's Football School when I was young. He did say one of the oddest things ever though when he claimed that every team starts the league on 46 points as every game is 0-0 at the start.

Back to the players. Another good loan signing was Jacob Murphy, who did a great deal to save us from relegation in 2015.

Another decent loanee was left back David Coleman - probably only played 9 or 10 games for us around 1988/89.

I think he was loaned to us from Bournemouth

Centre Back berth - Matt Connelly played in second Championship season, but recalled to Gooners so they could sell him.

That was one I had never heard of. After looking him up I found he played 6 games for us on a one month loan in the 1987/88 season, scoring one goal. Sad to read he died when he was only 30.

As he was on loan originally, and sticking with the Big Roy era, Mike Masters - first American to score at Wembley!
