Robbie Shakespeare RIP 07:50 - Dec 9 with 2504 viewslondonscottish

What a loss :-(

I first became aware of Sly & Robbie in the 80's through the work they did with Black Uhuru and they just kept cropping up over and over again.

I first saw them play live in the early 90's when the supported the Taxi Gang tour in Brixton Academy. What I found most amazing was the 30 minute free-form set they did in the middle which I could only describe as being some form of reggae/dub/jazz.

Their list of collaborations is utterly vast. To pick just one, I still listen to the stuff they recorded with Grace Jones - my favourite being the Compass Point Sessions where there are both vocal and dub versions of most of the tunes.

When I heard they were playing in the Jazz Cafe in 2018 I went to see them. They were playing with a jazz trumpet player, Nils Petter Morgan and had an amazing Finnish producer with a massive sound board doing live mixing and sampling. Quite extraordinary.

I was lucky enough to get to say hello to Robbie after the gig - he was hanging around outside having a fag.

Anyway, what a bass player and what a duo. 68 is no age. RIP.
