Anyone play scrabble on here? 11:34 - Oct 28 with 5419 viewsloftboy

Been playing weekly with the Mrs, she usually beats me 3 games to 2, last night I ended a game with 525 points after for the first time ever with a word that went through two treble word scores!
There was already a D on the board on the left hand side and I had the remaining letters to make “Hedgerow” then got two more 7 letter words. I finally beat the Mrs 3-2 after being 2 games down.
You lot probably think I’m a sad git but I needed to let the world know!!

You got ‘hedgerow’ crossing 2 treble-word scores! I wouldn’t be keeping that privet either

Be interesting to see if any bids come in for Loftboy when the transfer window reopens in January. Given his age, I'd be tempted to get as high a transfer fee now, and not gamble on any future sell-on clauses etc.

We’ve been down this route before Planet. Conor Washington was signed almost solely on his ability to play Scrabble. He looked world-class on his showreel but on a wet Tuesday night in Burnley failed to come up with high scorers like quixotic, maximize, and oxidized, or even cowzarse, banjo or barndoor.

Unfortunately, Washington couldn't finish and ignored the simple opportunities presented by aa, ab, ad, ae, ag, ai, al, etc

My wife is an English teacher, so I usually lose.
But the look on her face was priceless when I showed her an interview with the world champion, who said he liked to throw players off their stride by starting with the word c~^t.

Needless to say, the Missus has banned me from using it in our games.

I made the mistake of assuming that playing scrabble was a pleasant way to pass an evening until I played against two seriously competitive strategic players. I was happy just getting the words on the board without comprehending quite what criminal act I'd committed gifting points to the player who was following with the other player (my ex) practically blowing a gasket as games slipped away from him due to my ineptitude. I also wasn't reading the room too fast as I'd possibly had a vodka or two so was oblivious to the tension. I was also bankrupted possibly within a couple of laps of the board by said ex at Monopoly - I'd never seen anyone so deadly clinical - I haven't played it, or scrabble, since. A seriously bad loser though as when I beat him at Trivial Pursuit he accused me of memorising all the answers on the cards - and he was serious.

The irony of "Sesquipedalianism" not fitting on the board, albeit "sesquipedalian" fits with room to spare.

Paradoxically, it's a maths game rather than a words game. You win by assessing probabilities of your opponent having the letters to exploit what you lay. The best Scrabble players are often mathematicians whose knowledge of the words extends no further than their application on a Scrabble board.

I invented a variation of Scrabble which hybridised it with Darts. It was fairly simple; both players throw one dart at a conventional dartboard. You then go to the scrabble-board and times whatever your dart score was with whatever your Scrabble score is. And then repeat: dart/ word/ dart/ word etc. The one and only time I played it was with an ex. At first she thought it was a great idea - the perfect way to fill in the Xmas to New Year in between days but I got madly lucky with my dart throws and (with some smart Scrabble acumen added) soon went into an unassailable lead. She was trounced and she really didn’t like it. I sometimes reflect if this was the start of the break up. Btw: We called the short-lived game Drabble.

Also my hypothesis about crosswords - they're enjoyed by people with an aptitude for maths.
