But given we can change half the outfield team from the bench, would it not make sense to have a system that reflects this with starters and finishers of games, as we see in other sports such as rugby. I often see like for like changes, Dembele for Smyth on Wednesday for example, but not so much a change in system that supports the pros and cons of the players introduced. Knowing that Dembele isn’t going to track back diligently, why not stick a third midfielder in or simply task someone else to fill the gap he will inevitably leave gaping. I think we eventually did that with Morgan coming on and Soton sitting deeper but it might make for a more systematic and practical approach than piecemeal 1 for 1 solutions. Maybe when Dembele comes on we go 433 and add Hayden/Field/Morgan or similar because we all know what is coming, apart from the bench it seems. We could also just ask Dembele to do the same job as Smyth does covering back, but I’m not convinced he can do that, even if he wanted to. Failing that, how about just switching the inverted wingers over for a period in games where the cutting inside doesn’t work well enough - or, stop crossing the ball when it keeps getting cleared away, or change the set-piece taker once in a while. I’m probably over simplifying matters as an ignorant, remote fan but having a smarter plan B and C don’t seem that bad an idea, given we have a full bench and cover for different options. I know Marti (not the Messiah), would switch to a back three when chasing a game - but I’m not sure we have even tried that option yet within a game this season. Confused.com | |
