8/10 for me today.

Worked out that Paul Smyth dived a lot, and didn't give him anything.

All yellows given for cynical fouls in midfield (there were a lot of them).

Let the game flow and didn't make it all about him.

Except didn't let a quick free kick go that would have almost certainly made it 4-1 us in the dying seconds, when he at first had let it go. Which none of us understood.

After we went 3-1 up, for the next 15 I mins
it felt to me like he gave them some very soft free kicks whilst ignoring some worse fouls on us. Thankfully it didn't make a difference in the end.

Still don't understand why he called back the free kick

He gave Smyth a fair few.

It's being so happy that keeps me going.

Let Kolli off the most obvious yellow you’ll ever see and then the defender who he fouled shortly after for the retribution. Agree though overall was certainly above average.

Yeah and the linos giving a lot of decisions in the home side's favour in that time.

Oh well never mind

Can you point me to any of these dives by Smyth?

If there were any I must’ve missed them

I was too busy watching a tenacious, battling display from him which was epitomised by him refusing to give up a ball versus two Leicester players who had 18 stone on him combined, emerges with said ball, beats another player and forces the keeper into a good save.
For me he was, again in an away match, exactly what we need(ed) and pushed Edwards for MoM.

Yes, I agree with all of that. He kept shielding the ball with his body and falling with the contact.

It's soft but a foul in the modern game. It's what Eze did when he was with us.

And what most defenders do if they feel any contact at all.

Tenacity, grit and determination - as you say, some of the key attributes required when up against in games and also getting shit online.

That incident you called out, perfectly reflects Smyth’s abundance of these traits. It also rubs off on others when you see these standards being applied by teammates.

However, I guess they must be very personal and almost impossible to coach, because they have been missing in more allegedly skilled and ‘progressive’ players who have been going backwards and/or missing in games recently.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Aside from the goals, that was the play of the game.

Its a constant with Smyth.

For me, he very often cons referees when he falls over the ball.

if i was a ref i would be aware of this, pre match and am surprised how high a percentage of decisions he gets on this.

He is the sort of player that is going to wind up the opposition which is also another part of the game which helps towards a winning performance so if some of his dives are given as fouls, keep them coming.

That was typical Smyth. Would have been a great goal.

I wouldn't say often. For me, he plays the game in the modern way. If you don't go down with the contact you're not getting anything. So react to it and win free kick.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work in the penalty area.
