Let’s face it, Portsmouth were the better side yesterday! 07:32 - Mar 22 with 10007 viewssevenhoop

Delighted win the win and the finishing was absolutely sublime (can’t think of another chances to goals ratio for us - boot on the other foot earlier this season at Coventry but they were tearing us apart anyway - like it but maybe Jack will have the answers).

But I did feel a bit sorry for pompey as I thought they put a shift in and played well. Can see them staying up if they convert chances.

I don’t know about better side but there was very little in it, play the same game again and we could easily lose. It was interesting that they had a slightly higher XG than us and 33 touches in the box compared to our 6!

We finished our chances, they didn’t and sometimes that is the way football goes. Fantastic result but even as JS said in the post match interview we have played much better.

Score line flattered us as we wasn’t that good & even our manager said that, but awesome finishing was the difference

When you go 2 goals up relatively quickly, the other side always tends to get on top. Outside of the Prem anyway. Because most teams are pretty evenly matched in this league.

I thought the same and was saying during the game that QPR seemed to be scoring with every shot making a change from the normal lack of accuracy , whilst Portsmouth were doing much of the attacking.

This us why Edwards and Walsh in particular had very good games.

Definitely one of the strangest games I have ever been to. I think we pretty obviously deserved to win and considering goals and finishing are the key part of the game we did that brilliantly. Pleased for Kone, a good all round game today.

I didn't get the logic of taking Kolli off when on a hatters and being 4-1 up; the penalty bore that out but actually from the general team point of view it was a masterstroke as more valuable perhaps for Kone to get some good confidence - so fair play to JS there.

Not sure I agree that Walsh had that good a game - I like him and undoubtedly a few good saves, but his positioning for the save in the first half was most suspect and he was very fortunate not to fumble in a straightforward shot. Perhaps that slice of luck is just what he needs.

Edwards, however, looked very good indeed.

Got to enjoy a 6 goal fest, what do we average on seeing that (in our favour!) - once every 6/7 years? Well done everyone.

Yeah strange one on Kolli. Are they trying to “manage” his minutes a bit? That’s all I could think. He’s never really had the chance of a run of games, through injury and selection.

Haha no way were Portsmouth the “better side”.

Defensively they were awful and although they had a decent amount of possession their finishing was hopeless. No chance they are staying up based on yesterday’s showing and their recent form.
Shame as it would be good to see Leicester relegated.

Ridiculous call. Pompey were totally ineffective in every area of the pitch, they had possession but could do nothing with it and defended like scared rabbits , we ran through them at will. You don't lose 6-1 if you are the better side, give your head a wobble.

I had to watch it on a Pompey stream. The pundits were were very critical about being slow to every ball and when they had possession taking too many touches.

The stats showed Pompey having almost 60% possession and 20 shots with 7 on target. We had 9 shots of which 8 were on target.

I can only visualise the six goals and one shot straight at the keeper (Kone?).
Who missed the target?

Pompey had loads of the ball, but bar Alli on the wing (who when he realised he couldn't skin Mbengue decided to whip in some brilliant crosses instead) had very little.
We backed ourselves to deal with what they had and consequently did. Their shots came from outside the box I felt, which with Swift is always a danger. But they missed their big chance at 3-1 just after half time to pull it back and after that they were done.
Obviously wasn't a 6-1 win on stats... but we managed the game pretty well and took our chances.

They also were a defensive shambles

We were all nervous at 3-1 up and even 4-1 as Pompey kept carving us open time amd ti,e again.

At 4-1 the stats were similarly nuts; they'd had 12 touches in the box but just 1 goal - we'd 3 touches but had scored 4 :-)

We’ve played better than that and lost - Wrexham at home in the first half particularly. But the thing is you have to play well in ALL parts of the game not just some of them.

Yes they looked good in the middle third of the pitch, moving the ball through us pretty well. But we looked much better defensively, particularly Ronnie making it really hard for their forward players to get a decent shot/header away several times; which is maybe why they had lots of shots but they weren’t effective despite some good deliveries into the box.

Also we’ve clearly been working on closing down shots from distance. I know we’ve been blaming Walsh for being beaten for some long ranged shots, and he has been partly at fault, but you never want anyone to get a free shot from anywhere in the pitch and we’ve been too slow closing people down. Yesterday we got some good blocks in and just largely didn’t give them a chance of too much space to take a shot.

We also took our chances infinitely better. We gave ourselves space to shoot, and they didn’t close us down quickly enough. If Kolli and Kone could do all parts of the game as well as they can shoot they’d be world class players! Not criticising them, they’re both still learning. Kone as well works incredibly hard. I just think he needs to learn some of the tricks about movement and body shape to beat a defender as well as using his sheer strength that the wily old campaigners have learnt over the years.

I watched on a Pompey stream and had to laugh when I saw the 3 touches in their box and we had scored 4 goals! Madness…but brilliant of course

Pompey, defensively were awful, but we were just as bad. They just couldn't finish.

If we played like that against any of the top 4, they'd have hit double figures against us.
We didn't control the midfield, possession was at about 40 odd %, and performance overall was poor. We gave the ball away countless times in CM trying to make really basic passes under zero pressure. Strip out the goals, and I don't think anyone can say we played good attractive football.

This performance was no different than those against Blackburn a couple of weeks ago. Even JS said we played a lot better.

Nice to score 6, but it was all a bit 'meh'. Like Derby last season.

If you struggle to appreciate and really enjoy it when your team score 6 goals in a game then that’s a bit sad.

I understand the sentiment of the thread. It was a strange strange game. Utterly ruthless finishing from us. At 3-1 they missed a huge opportunity to make it 3-2 and then its a totally different game.

Because we aren't a team that dominates games, we have become a moments team. Keeping at 3-1 then going up the other end and scoring was key.

Ala Leicester last week at 1-0 down. Wrexham at home. Moments.

But when you see they had 33 touches in our box and we only had 6 in theirs, tells you a hell of a lot about the game. We wont see a stranger game for a long long time.

To be fair, I think he has a point and plenty of others have posted similar thoughts. We didn't play well and Pompey were on top during periods of the game. But we took our chances extremely well. They really didn't, bar the one goal.

It was a very unusual game but we all enjoyed it nonetheless, even though many left scratching their heads.

i watched on tv pompey v derby, i expected a noisy crowd, pompey at em etc nothing, awful and lost. v qpr yes they had a few moments but were awful imo and look lost. sometimes it happens when almost every shot goes in, other times they hit the roof, knock over the mascot yesterday it clicked for qpr. great/ we are safe

Some typically provocative comments, but it was a really, really strange game. I can't remember seeing one like that before. They were in the same sort of peril a team usually is when you cross their six yard line every time we came over halfway.

"Up there for Most Negative Post of the Year."
You win the prize here Wilkins.

As you say, if you take out every one of the six brilliantly taken goals, we were absolutley fr*cking dreadful !!!

If we hadnt conceded any goals against this season, we would be top of the table !!!

Yes the score flattered us but nobody can seriously claim Portsmouth were better than us or we didn’t deserve to win.

Hmm.

Just imagining what sort of reaction you'd get if you came on here after we'd shipped six goals and said "You know what? We were the better side."
