Has this been mentioned yet? Julien found this in the back of a cupboard and Portsmouth chose to defend with only 2 (perhaps because they were already losing). As a result, our “attacking” players looked more nervous and uncertain than theirs. I knew there was a reason you don’t see it more often.

It doesn't take much. Pompey commentary indicated they were unsure what to do. Players dropping back and then realising they were losing, moving forward again.

We need to work on it.

Yes, but it wasn’t seen again until yesterday, when it might have given Birmingham for example something to think about. I think the calculation is different if you’re winning (why make it easier for them to score) than if you’re losing (what have we got to lose?)

I like that there's some attempts at inventiveness and anything is better than having 11 players back!

We did it against Sheffield United and Coventry. Cov didn't really seem to know what to do, but United & Portsmouth both seemed to cotton on quite quickly that they can take a corner short and suddenly there's a lot more space and a one man advantage for them around the edge of the area.

I guess, given how crap we have been at defending corners this season, forcing the opposition to think on their feet and generally take a short corner is a partial victory. But yet to see it result in us being able to counter quickly and there were a few times against Sheffield United that we were a bit fortunate they didn't make better use of the short corner routine.

It should make it easier to defend a corner if you have a keeper who isn’t great on crosses,or being smothered by attackers.
And it gives us someone to pass to instead of passing it around at the back until we get some players up front.

I like it a lot. There are clearly pluses and minuses but nonetheless, it gives a better chance of actual football being played than the mass scrummaging we usually get at corners these days.
