Nardi, while taking into account his faults too, is the one we'll come to regret I think.

Good luck to all of them.

So current entire goalkeeping situation in the first team squad = Joe Walsh.

Scrabbling around again when clubs know we are in need.

I thought proper planning was meant to stop this sort of thing happening?

Absolutely right decision. Hamer too old obviously, Nardi has too many flaws - heart in mouth every time a cross came in - but always seemed to do his best and a nice fella, Hayden not really up to it. Must admit I didn’t really see what everyone raved about first time around but thought I must be wrong as so many people rated him so thought it would be a good signing; but bit disappointing really given his probable high wages.

Hope we can do much better with GKs and DMs next season, as well as FBs.

Wish them all well in the future.

100% all three of these players will not find a club at a higher level next season. Its a good move letting these three depart early

Maybe they have this covered but not announced, but even with his faults, Nardi is better than no keeper right?

Good luck to all three for the future.
A pity that Ben Hamer wasn't put to more use.

Hayden may have been disappointing, but it's more experience going out of the squad. We need a few grizzly hard championship types. Just replacing him with an esquardinha type isn't going to help

Am I misremembering, but didn't Nardi start well for us? He seemed to fall out of favour and would then occasionally re-appear with a new found inability to catch a cross?

One thing I've observed is that we seem to have a habit of dropping players or playing younger players infrequently and then bringing them back for the odd game and absolutely coating them when they don't perform!

Absolutely right. We need a better balance next season and a few bigger guys with physicality to deal with the Millwall style matches.

We don’t have another game for 3 months so what’s the issue? It doesn’t have to be one out and one in at exactly the same time.

Nardi had one of the worst save percentages in the Championship last season - around 65%. The best keepers had over 75% and James Trafford had 84%! The only GK playing over 30 matches last season who had a worse save percentage was James Beadle. It’s true Nardi did have a quite high number of saves to make butt others also did who had a better save percentage. With that plus the weakness in claiming crosses it’s hard to argue for renewing his contract.

The thing is I think when you have a not great keeper you maybe don’t notice the goals they fail to prevent by not claiming balls in the six yard box or making high claims or bog standard saves. And then you notice how many saves or claims the other keeper makes and you think maybe ours just isn’t good enough. How often do I think the oppo GK has had a stormer but maybe that’s just normal….

Maybe they've made these decisions because they have planned ahead and have other GK options waiting in the wings?

Then again, maybe not

Of course it doesn't, but I don't see how it is advantageous to (i) go into another new season with (presumably) a fresh No.1, or at least doubt about who it will be, and no cohesion built with the defence other than in friendlies (ii) go shopping when everyone knows all we have in the goalkeeping department is a flaky youngster and another that was on loan?

I don't disagree particularly with letting Nardi and Harmer go. I do think that having no forward planning for next season in the goalkeeping department is shoddy.

I think it's the right call to release all 3, We've got 3 keepers still and I'm sure we will sign another one

They'll have targets.

It really wouldn't be difficult or expensive to improve on Nardi, Walsh and Hamer.

If we go into next year with Walsh and Cooper as our keepers then they'll deserve a pasting, but we won't.

All good, each have been decent in their own way. Hayden especially came at an important time for both spells. It might have been nice to make this announcement before the Derby game, so the crowd could acknowledge them directly. I imagine that's why Nardi started that game, but ho hum....

Also along with Cook, that's 4 players leaving at contract end that's taking a hell of a lot of experience and years in the leagues with them. We keep saying it, but I hope the club has that amongst their criteria when it comes to finding suitable replacements

I think having experience in the squad is important, but I think its more important that the quality is there.

I reckon its far more damaging to have a player on big money who is a bit cack, then the rest of the squad look at this guy and say to themselves (or out loud)
"How come this lazy bar steward earns three times more than me?"

Now, I don't think you could have accused Steve Cook of this, and I don't watch the squad train, but Hayden in a match?

--Not the perfect role model for me, I'm sure he can find another club like Portsmouth, good luck!

Except we do have Walsh and Salamon. Cooper as well if he doesn't go elsewhere.

Well I certainly hope they do and maybe they did some worthwhile groundwork in January for them and I will happily eat my words. But after a whole season of faffing about with the keepers, ending it with this situation isn't a tick from me. I guess they put all their eggs in the Walsh basket, and he dropped them.

So you’d have kept Hamer or Nardi and offered either one a new contract?
They’ve announced nice and early that three senior players are leaving which is fair to the individuals involved and gives us plenty of time to get replacements: seems common sense to me.

No, of course it is right to release Nardi and Hamer. For me, they had given up on Nardi last summer so in that case getting Hamer and not a more viable longer-term keeper was poor planning. As if Walsh didn't cut it, we would have known this situation was possible coming in to the summer. Admittedly I know nothing about transfer negotiations, but if clubs play hardball on our targets - we are going to have little leeway? We can't start next season with Walsh and Cooper, surely.
