If Soton are found to have done this, surely they must not only be fined but also eliminated from the competition. It's a level of cheating verging on fraud.

I enjoyed the Hull manager's response to this last night.
“Why do you need to spy? We played already. I know everything about everything. What Middlesbrough will surprise (with?) He will put 14 players? What? Unbelievable. Really?”

Leeds were fined £200k for doing this against Derby & possibly other clubs?
Derby ended up beating them in the play off semi finals, but the spying was earlier in the season.
Apparently the rules were tightened up after the Leeds thing.
I don't know what the penalty could be but a fine seems meaningless.
If it were up to me and it is proven that they spied on Boro they should be kicked out of the playoffs.
If it's also proven that they have been systematically doing this then they should get hammered. Either a heavy points deduction for next season or demotion to L1.
Unless of course everyone has been at it in which case it's just embarrassing all round.
I wonder how Nourry is coping with the news that his competitive advantage might all be sitting on a Southampton laptop?
Thoughts and prayers

Some of our opposition spied on us this year and it had pretty dire consequences. Several of the spies were hospitalised with hernias caused by hysterical laughter.
'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

Hide in the trees round Heston you run the risk of being clunked on the head by one of our kick off routines.

I don’t get the hysterical reactions to this. Southampton watched Middlesbrough train. Okay, apparently they’re not allowed to but so what? Any decent manager or team would adjust their tactics in-game if they realised their game-plan was being nullified or exposed. Is this really cheating? They’re not using PEDs or bunging refs. I see it as research and if anything have a bit of respect for Saint’s tenacity. Then again I get the Hull managers response which was a big ‘whatever’

I dont see a problem with it on a sporting level , anything to get an edge if it doesnt harm anyone . If its against the rules that they all signed up to fair enough

It's about the integrity of the sport. And all sports tend to have strong sanctions to protect that integrity because without it it isn't really a contest.
Earlier in the season we abandoned trying to play out from the back and caught Charlton cold by going direct and beating them 3-1. Nathan Jones admitted afterwards that he didn't see that coming.
Many years ago I can remember Mourinho's Chelsea blitzing Barcelona and scoring three early goals before Barca realised Chelsea weren't just going to park the bus and keep it tight.
If your opponent knows what your gameplan is before you even walk on the pitch all that preparation and element of surprise goes out the window.
FWIW the EFL has laid two charges against Southampton:
EFL Regulation 3.4, which requires Clubs to act towards each other with the utmost good faith; and
EFL Regulation 127, which prohibits any Club from observing, or attempting to observe, another Club’s training session within 72 hours of a scheduled match between the two Clubs.
What do you learn from a (single) training session though?
The only advantage could be regatding set pieces maybe? But thats only a small part of the game. I doubt Boro will be chanigng formation for the playoffs.
You would probably leanr more from.watxhing the games on TV.
But the point is there is a rule about it. So they shouldnt have done it. So they should be punished.
Reading up on the rules, this rule doesn't seem to have a defined penalty attached. Never understand why organisations who draw up rules and clauses don't take the extra time to insert a defined penalty as well.
This could drag on...
"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."
I wonder what would happen if someone watched a training session using those smart glasses, recorded the whole thing and put it up on the internet 24 hours before the match and the team they observed was playing away, which means they have no time to change it as they have just spent that time travelling to the home cub.
You see from such training sessions, you can observe facts like ... oh I see RND is not training that means hes unlikly to play. Lets smash it down their left and take whoever is playing there (Esq) apart. Easy pickings.
Or Dunne is not training, okay go long and high as Cook is out as well. And so on.
I think it does give you a lot of information beforehand. You can see what type of corners and free kicks Vale takes and he will be taking them when Madesen and Chair our out.
This yeah it was all on Vale, that Smyth started taking some of them, just to change it up.
They should be explelled from the playoffs right now as they knew what they were doing and knew it was wrong. Also, it should be a message to other clubs, that these tactics will not be tolerated.
Don't worry, Boro will beat Millwall.
zzzzzzzzzz

EFL will easily resolve this:
Southampton win the playoffs = nominal fine and a warning
Southampton lose the playoffs = 6 points reduction, imposed this season so they would’ve still been in fourth place and playing Boro
As you were.
Let's assume a six point deduction was the tariff for this.
Boro are said to be looking into the possibility that Saints have been doing this to other clubs.
Six separate proven charges at six points deducted per time would drop them into the bottom three!
Oxford might like the sound of that.
Two separate proven charges would be enough to get Wrexham into the playoffs.
And I doubt anyone wants Hollywood FC lawyers coming after them smelling blood.
My guess is that the EFL will want to fudge it, because that's what they usually do. But this one has the potential to get very messy if they can't keep a lid on it.

Since then their league record is W-14, D-5, L-0, F-43, A-16, Pts-47, GD- +27
Along the way they beat Arsenal in the FA Cup and narrowly lost to Man City in the semi final.
None of that is proof of cheating. They do have parachute money and one of the strongest squads in the division. But it is quite a spectacular turnaround from where they were.
