Tuck among 7 development squad releases on 16:32 - May 12 by TheChef
Shame about Tuck who looked decent to me in the DS cup win a year ago.
Will be interesting to see where he ends up.
I agree, he did look good in that final, but I also saw him play for Hampton and Richmond against Eastleigh in the FA Cup earlier in the season. He didn't do a lot and struggled to impose himself on the game. A narrow sample I know, but I didn't see anything there that made him stand out from the others. Mind you, he was up against Jordan Cousins!

Alfie’s short loan period with H&R was during the time his shoulder was constantly dislocating so he was definitely holding back in that game amongst others. Once he was over the 10 week recovery period following his operation he found himself a return loan to Farnborough back in February when it looked like the club were heading fast into the relegation zone. He played every game for the rest of this season and was part of the squad which successfully helped the club to remain in the NLS. Out of all the games you could have watched, it’s a shame it was the Eastleigh one!

Fair enough, as I said, it was a narrow sample. I didn't know anything about his shoulder injury. It's always disappointing to see young players released and I wish all of them well for the future

Very odd how pre-Perpignan he was basically seen as the great white hope and a first team prospect, and then after that trip was basically begging a loan at Hampton and Farnborough.
Intrigued to see where he ends up.

Good luck to all these young men and thank you for the success and joy you brought with the DS squad cup wins.
Unfortunately, it is a huge step up to Championship level and the club must firm in who has a realistic chance and who should seek employment elsewhere, at a different level. It's making room in the budget and giving opportunities to new talent.
I found the following statement most interesting and am wondering exactly what support the club is or will continue to offer Jake.
'Jake Leahy possesses outstanding leadership qualities, acting as a role model for all players that he has shared a dressing room with during his time with the club. He has applied himself magnificently to all aspects of his programme, including his continued commitment to the PFA business degree and coaching qualifications. We look forward to continuing to support his journey as he blends his time between playing and coaching.'
Best wishes to all seven. Hopefully most of them will find a club to join if they wish to stay in football.
The only player I knew anything (little) about is Alfie Tuck, but I'm not surprised at his release. If the club had considered him good enough, he would have made the first team squad. That doesn't rule out that he won't achieve higher status than Rangers do though!

If we’re loaning development squad players to non league football doesn’t that imply we already know they’re not going to make it at championship level?
I’d like to see a reformation of the old combination league. Easier to keep tabs on our own players, new and old, a proper opportunity for injured first teamers to play themselves back into match standard competitiveness alongside younger players who also gain a feel of that level of football.
Seems the likes of Chair and Poku virtually disappear off the map until they literally return to the team. Fans would also be able to chart where they are rather than this cloak of anonymity that pervades their comebacks at present.
The modern set up doesn’t seem to do anyone a service.

Alex Carroll is a very holistic academy director. I think it's in this podcast he describes staying in touch with players and nurturing their career or education for years after they leave, seeing the development of youth players meaning much more than just their playing career.
A year old, but worth a listen (if it's one I listened to)

I mean is it really that odd? He got pushed on the manager for pre season, was very quickly deemed nowhere near good enough and so his interest and value to the club was immediately zero and he was left to his own devices.
Exact same thing happened a few years back to fellow white hope Harry Murphy. (Just released by Southern League Bracknell Town btw….)

From the club's POV it makes sense to release if it is unlikely any will get to Championship level. Unfortunately, only around 1 in 10 Academy players will go on to have a decent career in the Football League, at any level. It's brutally harsh but it's part of life. Most of those have had decent loan spells at clubs of at least National League South and should have opportunities for their footballing futures.
I wish them luck.

I do like the way Nourry pays individual tribute to each player. It's classy and feels an improvement on the olden days.
Trouble is, what he says about them is so positive, you end up questioning why they've been released!
Seriously though, this sport can be brutal. I really feel for them. These lads have given everything and have been part of a group that's won two trophies for the club. I hope they can take what they've learned and find their next opportunity soon.

I'd fancy an injury-free Tuck to bounce back and make an EFL career. The rest I don't think we'll see again. Actually surprised a few more haven't gone, the likes of Wilkie, Dillon, Friel, Dyke etc won't make it with us. Could have longer contracts though.

Fortunately, the only injury he has had was a repeating shoulder dislocation last year which was operated on and has been absolutely fine since

He didn’t beg for either loan, both clubs approached him due to his midfield technical capabilities. He went on loan as he wanted experience of men’s football

You need to know the correct facts before commenting. He wasn’t forced on the manager, he was asked to go on the preseason tour for the second year running - on the latter occasion owing to Jonathan Varane’s injury just before travelling

Sorry that's my turn of phrase, I meant it felt odd that he went from first team squad to a loan at that level quickly after Perpignan and it felt odd because, like I say, I'd always quite rated him when I saw him play.

Having watched Tuck in a few preseason games, I went to Hampton v Eastleigh in the FA Cup back in September. Jordan Cousins was playing for Eastleigh and the difference between him physically and every other player on the pitch was very surprising. He was a monster.
Wishing all the lads good luck, whether that is if they stay in football or outside.
As an aside, what is it that means some can take that step up from DS to 1st team? So few make it.

Physicality would be my short answer best guess once it’s been established they’re good enough technically/ability wise.
Why it’s best under hype and over deliver, both individual players and the development squad as a whole. Winning trophies at that level doesn’t mean much.
