This sickened me - murdered on Battersea Bridge.
And some say this country is better now than previously. Heads in the sand.

i retired from TFL after 36 years but one main reason is the constant abuse, threats and being spat at, a mate was threatened with a machete, another had his jaw broken recently for telling someone, peeing outside a station "theres a toilet inside mate" fella turns round and wallop , staff goes down, jaw broke. so many but if staff do anything back we get sacked and could lose pensions ( we pay in, they top up and can withdraw their top up)
kids are feral , most have discount travel but dont use them as it leaves a trace and they want to be gangstas , this incident has not been headline news but the bus driver hitting a thief was??
when staff strike people are angry but a lot of the time, staff strike as an action v the abuse etc

This story doesn’t really fit with the media narrative that often paints TfL / LU workers as simply being greedy over pay, so it may not get much attention.

Very sad. I hope his family are able to get justice.

Apt by the way, that the RMT has launched this campaign:

I agree. Must be a tough job. Apart from the abuse they have the increasing problem of the heat and of course the traffic congestion and shift work. I don't think it's a job I could handle.
I'd give 'em a 20% rise and eternal life.

i have seen staff spat at, racially abused, hit, myself and i am 6ft and 18 stone have been chased by a madman with knife ( 20 police pepper sprayed him using shields, coshed the lot and no charge as he was care in community !) nearly pushed under moving train, spat at by a gang of yoofs , many times police come but do not want to nick anyone, they say it's usually our fault , staff dislike them and they distrust us it seems imo.
i have had bottles waved in my face , had traffic cones thrown at me and cos you wear the uniform you react you cop it, ask yourself, you get spat at , how do you take it?
i had to leave cos i was literally chasing a fella round station, i'd had enough and he ran away very sharp and i had to think, this is it, time to go. unions can start campaigns but until courts really take it serious , it won't stop. these AT WAR WITH FARE EVADERS tv things drive me nuts

It seems since covid lockdowns, so many people seem to have lost the plot. I got threatened by a bloke with a hammer when I was a postie in Ealing for, get this, putting an advertising leaflet through his door..

Turned out he was known to police, mental health issues etc (didn't stop him and his missus knocking out kids, and sitting around smoking weed all day).

RIP to this man. Just going about his life

People haven't lost the plot over covid - the culprit is social media.
Morons will behave as they are told by “ influencers” and various similarly moronic people.

I'm not blaming covid, I'm just saying a lot of people seem to have lost the plot since the lockdowns. Agree, too much nonsense on social media certainly hasn't helped

There's a lad called 'Johnny Somali' his thing was behaving badly in public, decided to go a world tour and got as far as south Korea. I think they gave him 6 months plus labour :-)

His trial took 2 years....and they held on to his passport.

I agree with the sentiment that London bus drivers should get danger money. It's crazy out there.

A mate of mine used to be a breakdown recovery driver with a HIAB truck.

He had a fluorescent vest on that said "RECOVERY" in big bold letters. Same on the front, sides nd back of the HIAB.

It didn't stop people thinking he was parking enforcement. They jumped to the conclusion he was removing illegally parked vehicles (he wasn't) and he got constantly abused, spat at and so on. So many times he loudly proclaimed "I'm RECOVERY, they've broken down and I'm helping them out, I'm not parking enforcement" and most people then just skulked off. No apology or anything.

He gave it up in the end.

RIP to the bus driver. A senseless loss.

Even allowing for being an old git I don't think things are better generally. I think those of us in our 60s might have lived through England's peak years. Functioning NHS, Free Education, affordable accommodation, loose morals, decent music etc.

Seems any public facing job these days comes with abuse and often violence. PAC

Because there’s too many kunts out there, age doesn’t matter. I commute every day 20 minutes C2C eastbound. Late teens to early 20s vaping on the train, some prick about 23 taps out every day with a child ticket on his phone. No security, no police but i doubt that would matter.

It's difficult to define a generation as there's a child born every minute or so. But it seems each generation is worse than the last. My Dad was of the “golden generation” of WW11. As a sort of weekend hippie, I was a bit of a let-down.
He often told me of his army days. The blood and gore, the stress and noise…..and the PEOPLE !!

I posted this a long time ago but you can make your own mind up.

Before I retired I had to go back to a small but fully occupied office block that we built but the tenants were complaining about a few niggly defects that hadn't been addressed, the building was virtually in the centre of Reading.

I was on the first floor listening to the building Manager whinging (all the windows were open, It being a hot day) all of a sudden we could all hear a Woman screaming and I mean screaming, I looked out of the window to see her being held against her will by some bloke, I ran out the door down the stairs and around to where she was and by this time (probably about a minute) he had disappeared, there were a few trees and bushes in the area, she looked in a right state, so I asked her If she was okay, her response was a torrent of abuse at me finishing with an eff off and mind my own effing business.
I turned around expecting to see a couple of blokes from the building backing me up but nobody, when I went back In the building the blokes explained that that area was a drug selling/using location for the local sellers and users and they usually call the Police but through no fault of their own the police rarely respond.
Listen I'm no hero but hearing that Woman screaming shook me up a bit so I went to help out a situation that I thought warranted It.

What do you do? I mean seriously do you help or do you turn the other way not knowing the consequences.

That night Mrs Ted thanked me for trying to help somebody but said that I should be more careful.

Happened about 10 Years ago, I honestly try to mind my own business but I don't know anymore.

Ted, early 90’s and me and three mates waiting in a queue to get into Break For The Border/The Borderline just off Tottenham Court Road.
A girl was pinned in a doorway by what looked like her boyfriend. Had her right by the throat screaming in her face. She was terrified.
So, we all left the queue and each grabbed him by a limb and pinned him down.
The girlfriend punched one of my mates in the face screaming “let ‘im gooo!”.
Up he got and they walked off arm in arm.
We were all a bit confused, my mate nursing his face and we lost our place in the queue.
Still, doorman bloke saw what we did and let us straight in. A few tequila shots got the evening off to a better start.

Funny old world.

Yes Ted, you never know.

About ten years ago, i witnessed a bloke harrassing a girl. She was in her car parked and he was outside.

Several of us witnessed the bloke being verbally aggressive then started rocking the car violently, and then put his size nines through the front window shattering it in the process. He then left.

All others watching buggered off. i went over asked her if she was ok and accompanied her to local police station. She made a statement and told all this man was her ex.

it went to court, and i went there on the day of the trial, was there waiting for several hours, only to be informed, at the last minute the girl had decided to drop the case. She was pregnant with a new boyfriend and felt no need to dreg up the past.

Local coop near me, last year the post office counter staff were confronted by a thug wielding a machete.

Its a mad mad world, indeed...

I'm 55 now. I'm a bit torn on the crime/ society getting worse argument. I think it depends on the area. Statistically there were more murders in the 70s then there are now. I grew up in a decent area, but Erith was nearby and that was always a bit choice, but in Tonbridge now it's fine. But there is a continual stream of people moving out of London who say that it's just a zoo now. I stayed in Archway for the snooker in January and it was like the night of the loving dead round there. Crackheads everywhere
So I think it's still possible to lead an enjoyable life in the UK, but there is a sense that it's on the slide, and there is so much nostalgia about. The country needs to face up to it's problems in one sense, but we do need a bit of optimism too

It's almost as if closing all the mental health facilities and letting crazy people walk among us was a terrible idea. The real issue though is that London has too many people in it. Honestly, I live up north in a semi-rural area and it's like living in the 70s here. It's fking great and it's all down to not having f**king people everywhere.

You obviously did the right thing Ted.Luckily I’ve never been in that situation, but I wonder what I’d do if I was.I’d like to think that I’d do the decent thing but who knows until you’re faced with it.
And if I didn’t do anything and it resulted in someone being killed or seriously injured, how could I live with standing by and letting it happen?

We all see increasingly bad behaviour from w@nkers who know that they’re likely to get away with whatever they want because nobody challenges them about it any more.

RIP to the poor bus driver who should’ve been able to go home to his family after a days work.
