MY ENGLAND - The Southgate Drama Serialisation 13:40 - May 25 with 2813 viewsnumptydumpty

Basically starts with England losing to Iceland and follows Gareth Southgate's new England squad through the team psyche with our abilities to grab defeat from the jaws of victory....

I did watch it.

Appreciate, will get a lot of, its bad enough going through it in real life - without reliving as per the BBC drama production team, but did anyone else watch.

Have to say some of the impersonations of the individuals involved were excellent.

You can almost see the awkwardness of Southgate with him trying to instill new ideas and jetissonning the likes of Rooney etc.

Some actors much better at getting the players than others.

Anyhow, obviously not exactly the most dynamic of stories to relay, but am always impressed by how good certain actors are at playing real life people from our lifetimes.

Probably myself was about the only bit of interest, but just wondered if others had any opinions on this...

Any tv drama and production teams - how about following the Briatore Ecclestone and Paladini era, along with the Fernandes, Redknapp, Hughes era - a lot more material than following Gareth Southgates very functional England team !!!!

It's been a well respected play before the TV version.

It worked on stage and based on last night's part 1, will do so again on TV. They have found actors with a remarkable resemblance to Harry Maguire, Eric Dier and Harry Kane. (Incidentally how about Kane finishing a double-winning season by scoring a hat trick in the DFB-Pokal. That man is a hero in Bavaria).

Kane probably would have had an even more successful career if he had spent it at a top european club for most of his career.

Although brilliant at Spurs, he is better now. Hopefully, England benefit too.

I saw the touring version of the play at Woking earlier this year. It was very good. TV version is impressive so far and I'm looking forward to the rest of it.

We saw Dear England with Fiennes and Gina Mckee at the National Theatre in 2023. We found it a very enjoyable evening, albeit with some caricatures a bit overdone. I wonder how it'll transfer to TV but I'll give it a go.

Watched this the last two nights and will try to catch the final two episodes next weekend

If you didn't catch it, I'd recommend watching it as (others have said) the acting is superb. In actual fact, if anything, it is too good and comes close to exposing Southgate's sensibilities too much.

Looking forward to the next episode as last night's episode finished with Jaydon Sancho and Bukayo Saka having their penalties saved against Italy in the final of the Euros 2021 and I'm interested in how it tackles the racial discrimination that followed that.

The storyline could maybe scratch a bit more deeply below the surface and tell the footballing story of why it was that we couldn't win the thing, but by and large its a decent portayal and worth watching for the acting alone.

Watched the first episode last night. Fiennes is uncanny as Southgate, particularly from certain angles. I would like to know how much insight the playwright had - I assume stuff like the army training and his first meeting with the squad happened but have just been highly dramatised, like the players saying their numbers before taking or saving penalties.

The way they blended the drama with the match footage worked really well on TV.

Enjoyable, if a bit silly, while being the most woke drama possible. Yes, Gareth, if you'd scored your penalty the UK would now be a more civilised country and Brexit wouldn't have happened. Put your foot through it ffs.

Only watched the first episode: fella playing Southgate absolutely nailed it. Lad playing Harry Kane looked the part, not so much most of the rest. Also Southgate seemed to have a squad of about 10 players in total! A lot of artistic license taken with what happened I’d assume: a disclaimer admitted as much at the beginning.

Joseph Fiennes portrayal of Southgate is scarily realistic. Great actor.

Agreed, even down to the nervous ticks. You kind of forget he's not the real Gareth. I thought it was very good. Well blended between real footage and staged. You know all the outcomes but it is nice to see how compassionate Gareth was to his players in this. Possibly too compassionate.

Never knowingly right.

I really enjoyed the play up in town and this series is very good as well from what I have seen so far (the first two parts)

I almost felt like it was going to end last night though. Not sure what they are filling the rest with, given we are only half way through.

England the never ending pain that it is, the so called Golden generation , bex, scholes etc won nothing , always seemed something wrong , the biggest mistake was beating GERANY 5-1 away, then they realised pressure was on to win the World cup and did all they could to not do so. taking injured players, losing to a 10 man brazil ( cos bex did not make sure ball went out, he jumped up, brazil passed ball and 1-1, mug) now it's they didn;t get on, north v south, club differences and mistrust. club managers feeding that myth.
manager after manager it went on, talent was there, facilities , all the best for no return and every time we looked like we could win, move on, we went defensive, into a shell, even Southgate did it, we romped teams, then tried to hold onto a 1-0 , which is difficult and often we failed.
southgate dumped the so called senior pros and their egos and disgusting WAG culture that was a bonus , he got us to semi finals and finals, development was there but couldn't cross the line.
next up another searing heat world cup, more games, more heat , more tva dn ads, yep, expect endless cola ads, beer ads and music oh yes, live music whoooppee do dah!
