Irritated some years ago by the constant stream of cr*p thrown over the low perimeter wall of my squash club (in the days when I could still just about play the game), I decided to buy a two-pronged litter-picking device and attempt to clean the place up.
Over the course of one weekend I collected nearly 100 bags of the stuff, some of which was unspeakably gross. In that category I include a discarded builder’s hat, harmless enough at first glance, but when I advanced the prongs of the litter-picker towards the brim, about half a million frenzied bluebottles emerged.
On closer inspection I realised that a workman, from the building site over the road in all probability, had taken a massive dump into his protective headwear and then thrown it over the fence.
On another occasion I found a voodoo doll with half a dozen pins inserted into various orifices. Fortunately I’m not superstitious (a fat lot of good it would do supporting QPR) so wasn’t overly alarmed.
This prompted me to think, has anyone ever found anything interesting/disturbing/valuable/disgusting (well, anything really) while litter-picking? On the plus side I’ve also found about £25 in notes and a few quid in coins over the years.
If litter-picking is a bit too ‘niche’ I think the category could probably be expanded to include random finds on public transport, back of cabs etc, even mudlarking or metal-detecting if anyone indulges.

We have a voluntary litter picking group in Lowestoft, once I’ve had my knee op in June I will be joining them once or twice a month.

Me and Mrs PSR do weekly litter picks on the roads closest to where we live. Also includes a bit of river clearance as we have one running alongside to our house. Can't lay claim to a voodoo doll but our most interesting find was a Victorian pistol on the river bed last summer. We generally get very supportive comments and nice chats with neighbours/locals but I have had a couple of cans and bottles chucked at me by passing motorists. | | | |

When I was a teenager, I was out on a cycle ride with my mates when I came across a camera lying by the side of a country road.
I picked it up and handed it in at a local police station, then forget about it.
Some time later, I received a letter offering profuse thanks. It turned out that the camera had been dropped by a young couple and contained the first pictures of their new baby.  |  |

Did some beach litter picking back when I lived in Mallorca, amazing the filth people will leave lying around. Imagined it would be like those mudlarking/beachcombing videos you see on Youtube and I'd find ancient treasures, but all I usually found was discarded San Miguel/Estrella/Mahou cans. Victorian pistol, love that! Bizarre behaviour from passing motorists though. I expect you aroused feelings of guilt and inadequacy within them.
River clearance is a great thing to get involved in too. There’s an organisation called Thames21 that is very active in that sort of thing if anyone’s interested (I spent a day fishing golf balls out of a lake once) …

I go litter picking once a month in Ipswich by the river Orwell.I’ve never been lucky enough to find any money,but the amount of stuff we pick up is amazing considering we do the same route every 4 weeks.
It seems like more people go out picking up other people’s rubbish that they can’t be bothered to dispose of properly.
I emailed our local council a few years ago and they sent me a litter picker and a roll of refuse sacks to use,which I’m slowly getting through. |  | | |

One of the cab drivers in my road picked up a mother and her toddler daughter in the vicinity of the Angel, Islington, dropping them off at what was the Old Street roundabout. He then headed to Liverpool Street station where he joined the back of the taxi rank.
Hearing a vague rustling sound coming from the passenger compartment, he turned round to find the child, alone but apparently unconcerned, standing up on the back seat, looking out of the rear window.
Realising that he must have pulled away before the girl had been able to alight, he returned to the original set down point to find the frantic mother surrounded by four police cars, blue lights flashing.

People discarding rubbish and, more seriously, fly-tipping across any public/private space and also contaminating waterways should be punishable with extreme violence.
Cannot abide it.
I absolutely doff my cap to the local people who operate around my area, called LAGER Can (Litter Action Group for Ealing Residents) but there really should not be a requirement for these people to volunteer.
Special mention for any dog owners who habitually don't pick up their crap.... you kuntz.... we all miss the odd turnout by our pooches but there are owners who never pick up. Drives me insane as responsible owners get the flack. |  |

Defo DNA in shit, and you wouldn't necessarily need a DNA database you could profile the DNA to identify breeds and cross reference with patient addresses from the vets.

On a slightly different note, in the 90s, I used to occasionally go to a nightclub in Buckinghamshire called The Rectory. It was actually located in some repurposed buildings in a farmyard.
It was quite a rustic place, lively without ever getting nasty, in my experience, at least.
That is just as well because one night, leaning on the large and venerable fireplace in one of the bars, my mate discovered....an axe!  Man alive, that was no place to leave such a thing lying around.
My mate handed it in at the bar, suggesting that they might not want to have such a thing on public display. Yikes! | |
