Richard was our reserve keeper when I first started supporting the R's in the 73-74 season.
Many years later (1990's) I was working up at Sellafield in Cumbria. One of my (older) workmates knew that I was QPR and told me "I used to go to school with a guy that played for your lot - but you won't know him"
It was Richard Teale, who was a Milllom lad.
Much to my colleagues delight and suprise I was able to tell him that I not only knew of him, but that he was back up to the great Phil Parkes.
Richard had a very successful non league career before and after his Rangers tenure.

Incredibly, I still have the match programmes for the two games Richard stood in for Phil Parkes. The first is a 0-1 home defeat to Birmingham City on Saturday 7th September 1974. The second was a 1-1 draw with Orient at Loftus Road in the 2nd Round of the League Cup on Tuesday 10th September.
After his first team debut in the Birmingham game Richard said: “Now I know what First Division football is all about. Players are so sharp in the box. I went up for a corner, was pushed and Gallagher scored as I dropped the ball”.

The Ranger to Ranger section at the back contained two or three readers’ letters. The Birmingham programme featured a letter from a Mr C. Wibrew, complaining about the pre-match ‘cacophony’ of sound brought about by the introduction of ‘Pop’ records. Can’t begin to imagine what he’d make of Pigbag.
And Miss Lorraine Larkin wrote in to say that she’d been supporting Rangers from the age of seven, when she came with a box to stand on because she couldn’t see a thing over everyone’s shoulders. “But I’m 5ft 6ins now”, she wrote. “Even taller than my Dad, and I get a very good view of what I reckon is the best side in England playing brilliant football”.
Funnily enough, I can’t recall attending any of those games, even though I’ve clearly crossed out Phil Parkes’ name on the back page and written in Richard’s to reflect the team changes, so thanks for giving us a flavour, Boston (even though it might not totally coincide with my own rose-tinted view of the past!) | | | |

I get rather wistful looking at those old programmes. Don’t know what it is, simpler times maybe?
The Ranger to Ranger section at the back contained two or three readers’ letters. The Birmingham programme featured a letter from a Mr C. Wibrew, complaining about the pre-match ‘cacophony’ of sound brought about by the introduction of ‘Pop’ records. Can’t begin to imagine what he’d make of Pigbag.
And Miss Lorraine Larkin wrote in to say that she’d been supporting Rangers from the age of seven, when she came with a box to stand on because she couldn’t see a thing over everyone’s shoulders. “But I’m 5ft 6ins now”, she wrote. “Even taller than my Dad, and I get a very good view of what I reckon is the best side in England playing brilliant football”.
Funnily enough, I can’t recall attending any of those games, even though I’ve clearly crossed out Phil Parkes’ name on the back page and written in Richard’s to reflect the team changes, so thanks for giving us a flavour, Boston (even though it might not totally coincide with my own rose-tinted view of the past!) |

Great claim to fame, Dixie. I found a photo from the Birmingham game in the programme for the home game against Everton on 24th September 1974 but the shirts were the familiar blue and white hoops (with collars and a small V-neck). Birmingham had maroon shirts with two vertical white stripes down the middle.
As an aside, there’s a letter in the Ranger to Ranger section, from the composer and BBC compère Steve Race, endorsing the previously mentioned Mr Wibrew’s complaint about the “screaming music played at Loftus Road”. Steve suggested that “middle-of-the-road popular music” might be a sensible compromise.
Editor Ron Phillips, while in general agreement, did point out that “such personalities in the pop world as Alvin Stardust, Tommy Steele and Tony Hicks (from the Hollies pop group) do sit in our stands”. All seems so quaint now.

This evening, I found er.. the piece of paper that substituted for a programme at the away game where we won 3-0. Blimey, Laurie Cunningham's in their squad, he'd only managed one appearance as a sub.
That was the season Man Utd were down and a visit to Brisbane Road was their first fixture, I seem to recall their graffiti scrawled all over the walls.
For the glossary...the ref was Ronald Charles Crabb from Exeter. [Post edited 17 Jun 2:47]
