Social media ban for under 16’s on 17:24 - Jun 16 by hubble
Well I can give you an example: Some time ago we were running a young person's literature prize at a book festival I'm involved with. We had entries (on a theme) from 5 local schools. 4 of the schools' entries were wonderfully random, anarchic, creative and different in the ways they covered the theme. But from one school (which I knew well as friends had kids there) and I knew was already heavily politicised (and making unwarranted major decisions about kids lives without the right to do so, for example allowing a child to say they were of a different gender or had a different name without consulting the parents first)... all of their entries were almost identical. Every child had turned the theme into a political issue; in this case they all referenced either gender or racism or both in their poems. These were 9 year olds. And I know that this is far from an isolated case. That's what I am referencing.
Appreciate the clarification, Hubble, but might that be an isolated example? Again, no idea if it is or it isn’t so I’m not having a go.
Bazza’s reference to the ‘Scandis’ grabbed my attention, too, mainly because one of the books I’ve got on the go just happens to be It’s OK To Be Angry About Capitalism by US senator Bernie Sanders (yep, the original ‘radical left lunatic’ himself).
He makes the case for the Finnish education system, which I won’t trouble anyone with at length here, but seems to involve a teaching profession that is highly qualified and well-paid (ie valued).
Primary education doesn’t start til the age of seven, schooldays aren’t that long and there is a balance between schoolwork and leisure. Letting ‘kids be kids’ essentially.
My flimsy analysis barely does it justice although I’m sure if anyone is interested they’ll look into this themselves!

How do you teach history, or literature, or Geography without politics?
How do you talk about women winning the right to vote without mentioning gender, or WWII without mentioning race for example?
I think maybe you're being deliberately bloody minded, because that's obviously not what I'm talking about. I am talking about deliberate political indoctrination which bears no relation to the teaching of history or geography or anything else.

I don't think it's an isolated example - in fact I know it's not - because I know people with kids at many other schools all over country (mainly metropolitan areas) and they have reported the same things. I don't think it's unreasonable to extrapolate from that.

Can you give me an example so it's clear?

Teaching 9 years olds about critical race theory or gender ideology from the perspective that this is the lens through which they should see the world.

My youngest and his class had had the white privilege chat from his drama teacher. A middle-class twit with, in this situation, authority, telling kids from a council estate how privileged they are. Repeat ad nauseum in the bloody Isle of Man, of all places.

These are broad terms that have been enshrined in national and global culture and laws for centuries, and have been taught as such since the invention formal education.
Why is it an issue now? Genuine question.

This is really flimsy mate.
I don't think a informal second hand conversation between a teacher and some pupils about really complex issues qualifies as the indoctrination of school kids? At best, it's a teacher expressing some views that may have been brought up by a pupil.
I grew up in social housing in the 80s and 90s. I know what skin colour I would rather have had at the time.
Edit: like Hubble this isn't personal, but I really believe your concern is misplaced.

Yes it does, because it should be NONE.
Edit: ok, thanks Bazza, good to know.

Or, it should be all, but something of a more participatory and liberating approach to teaching that focuses on the importance of dialogue and critical consciousness.
Schools are political, the curriculum & teaching methods reflect & influence power dynamics in society.

Yes, if I have to repeat it again: I'm clearly not talking about that, I'm talking about indoctrination.
Extraordinary claims deserve solid evidence.
We’ve heard a couple of anecdotal stories - a book‑prize entry from “one in five schools” and a free‑spirited drama teacher — but that’s hardly enough to draw big conclusions.

They are compared to black and brown people in the same situation. That's the whole point of it. It doesn't mean they're privileged. But it does mean they won't be the target of organised pogroms, for example.

Was he white, this privileged middle-class drama teacher?

I'm actually more concerned about the parents indoctrinating their children with the hate filled politics we see from the those on the right. Struggle to see the issue with teaching kids to be more tolerant of the differences between people whether that is in their culture, the makeup of their relationships, gender etc.
Telling kids to ask their parents when posed with these difficult questions children ask just seems ridiculous.

Give 'em a good clip round the ear 'ole, that'll sort 'em out. Seriously though, Keith Starmer has blundered giving 16&17 year olds the vote on the old truism that young people are more likely to vote Labour. I think they are more likely to vote Green if at all, and now he's upset them further.

Isolated incidents Bazza
Crazy things happen today.
Remember when this happened was chatting to this woman who was a gym teacher at a secondary school and she said she knew of three children that ended up transitioning to the opposite gender, but couple of years later all wanted to transition back.
Let alone a school teacher scolding two kids who said there was only two genders and also no way could we be cats. The very fact this teacher scolded the two girls basic common sense and protected the other girls right to identity as a cat is MAD.
The teacher then threw at the girls about homophobia, which the girls quite rightly adamantly said they had nothing against this quite rightly and that the teacher was trying to put ideas in their heads that they had not even said.
I know someone who was a married man who transitioned. He had a wife and kids but went female and has randomly now gone lesbian ie his gender changed but his sexual preference didn't. He had the op, but is still an incredibly manly woman with a very deep voice and the figure of your everyday JOSEPH Bloggs....
There is a lot out there today which is so easy for vulnerable people to be manipulated. The social media ban won't hold up. Kids know how to overcome these rules more than most adults - in Australia, a few years after a blanket ban, 80% young kids were still accessing social media platforms.
But beyond social media, outrageous ideas are out there and its almost impossible for parents to manage this.
But the very fact, many of these ideas are pandered to, is incredibly dangerous.
Feel sorry for confused of Shepherds Bush, because many impressionable minds can be filled with such nonsense. If the options weren't there, neither would the problems ensuing, but sadly they are.
I did not want to turn into one of the older boys who would say the world's gone mad, but on some fronts sadly it really really has.
Kier Starmer is not going to sort it with this unworkable plan and I can't see how society pulls back from the beyond of this confusing total nonsense.
I seriously would not wish to be 13 years old growing up with where society stands today.....

Think I’m almost as confused as ‘Confused of Shepherd’s Bush’ now.
