Bands who you love, but others don't realise are brilliant. Dexy's, more than any band I can think of, got done-in by the huge success of one of their songs, a song that really doesn't paint a true picture of who they are. Truth is, they've produced a varied and quality catalogue. Rowland is one of the talents of his generation, imo.

W. H. Lung. A Manchester band named after a Chinese food warehouse. I love them. Their last album was the joint best album of 2024.
Schtum. There's a new band called this but they're shit probably. My Schtum were a sort of Irish Fugazi sort of thing. This song is one of my very favourites.
Run With Hounds. A brilliant band who recorded an album but the production was shit and they didn't release it and seem to have broken up. It's a shame because the songs from before it were so great.

Not so much a band that others don't realise are brilliant, but one that didn't go as far as they probably should, especially with this banger. Shirley Manson on backing vocals is fantastic when she comes in towards the end.

My picks would be The Future Kings of England, with their at times eerie, at times symphonic pastoral prog rock and tales from East Anglian folklore (new album on the way after a15 year hiatus)
and the Californian band Djam Karet, purveyors of both engaging ambient soundscapes and pulsating, guitar-based rock. They seamlessly blend (a vast array of) acoustic and electronic instruments and do it better than any other band I know:

DMR’s 1st album, Searching for the Young Soul Revels, is a classic IMO. The follow up was good too, despite the ‘Wedding’ song. Loved the in between single Show Me. I struggled a little with the C&A fashioned 3rd, but have enjoyed a couple of the ‘Dexys’ albums in this century. I would have Loved to have seen the Projected Passion Revue tour.
Rowlands solo album, My Beauty (mostly covers) showcases his voice and passion well, IF you can get past the cover shot…..!?
So, yeah, good call Brian.
May I suggest - Big Audio Dynamite ? Similar era, but still ahead of their time for UK sampling and Rap. But the beat & melody stands strong.

Always feel WH Lung are a band just out of time. If their debut had dropped in 2008 they'd have been massive
