Home grown players at United 09:56 - Jul 11 with 974 viewsPlanetHonneywood

Just read on the BBC, that Manchester United have had at least one home grown player in a matchday squad since October 1937!

Whatever we think of them, to have achieved such over 89 years and counting, is impressive stuff. Especially when you think of some of the brilliant players they've nurtured.

Considering that we aspire to be a club that develops players, and that you can name 9 subs, I don't see why we can't allocate one of the subs to the U18s or even U16s to expose them to the match day experience, help their development, give solid proof of the pathway when recruiting young players etc.

I quite like the idea of reserving some space in the squad, though I guess as players under a certain age don't have to be listed in the squad it wouldn't make sense in some ways.

I guess the main issue is the ability of the CAT1 Premier League clubs ability to steal players for virtually no compensation - one of the worst rules in football IMO, and I guess a reason we are pushing to be a CAT1 Academy (unless Premier League teams can still steal players I can't remember)

Since 1937 is impressive.

Since 1997 is to be expected.

Ie. The big clubs poach all the best youth prospects, throughout the youth academies at all other clubs.. And they pay the money.
