An open letter to Cameron and Milliband. 11:55 - Aug 14 with 2472 viewspomanjou

I've really enjoyed the Limpix but time for the reality pills.

Subject:The silent majority

To David Cameron (Prime Minister) & Ed Milliband (Leader of the Opposition) ...

You BOTH Worry me. ( In fact both of your Political parties worry the hell out of me !)

Over the last three years, I find myself becoming more and more fearful of the pair of you, and between you, you are turning this country into a place that I no longer feel at home in, or feel a part of! I watch you in parliament, and no, not just the two of you, but every politician that I see, stand up in parliament sneering at each other, and acting like children. (..and if you were my children, I would be ashamed of you all ... What an example to set!)

Although you would like us all to believe that you are putting the needs of this country at the forefront, NEITHER of you are doing that, you seem more interested in "one-up-manship ", in scoring off each other, & denigrating each other, to the detriment of this country & its people. It seems to be all about YOU as individuals, and not about what you can DO for this country.
It is fast becoming a place that I do not recognize, as the place I always thought, was the best place in the world to be! But no longer.

You are not listening to the people of this country.
I am watching the deterioration of living standards in this country, (and according to you, on a world stage we are doing better than most countries). And yet the gap is widening between the "haves" and the "have-nots" . I see our homeless on the streets, our hospitals under-funded, and understaffed and yet I see multi-millions of dollars being sent offshore, in aid to other countries, before attending to this country's needs!

I see the "selling off of water rights to foreign interests, WHY...? Especially when you go to great lengths to tell us that water is a finite resource, & supposedly, we must ALL be careful with how we use it, so that we ensure we have it for the future ? A Carbon Tax,( which you KNOW is just another tax ) which will make NO appreciable difference, to carbon emissions, AT ALL!
A tax, which in spite of all your arguments FOR it, you are doing alone, when other major countries will NOT & DO NOT embrace it, or believe in it !

Let's talk about Multiculturalism ......People have come here from other countries, for a better life, for more years than I have been alive ( I am 74 years old !)

Pre & Post war immigrants came for a better life, and settled in and became wonderful contributors to this country, ... all have contributed to the rich diversity of this country, and some descendants have even fought FOR this country, and they have become U.K.citizens and were glad to be ...and they had NO handouts from our Government either, ...they worked hard for everything!
I have never before had a problem with all, or any, race of immigrants coming here. However, I DO NOW !!!

Please tell me why we have areas in towns and on large estates all over the country, where police do NOT, & will NOT go, for fear of their life ?
Please tell me why we can no longer have religion in schools for fear of "OFFENDING" someone ? (The latest little gem is that they are not having or being funded, for chaplains any more, but Counsellors!)
Please tell me why religious Christmas observances are no longer allowed in some schools for fear of OFFENDING someone ? Please tell me HOW Christmas decorations in some stores might OFFEND someone ? Please tell me why we have to have segregated days in some swimming centres for fear of "OFFENDING" someone ? Please tell me why we have some RADICAL clerics demanding Sharia Law in this country when if we were in THEIR country, this would NEVER be allowed? Please tell me why our laws need to be changed, so as not to OFFEND someone ? Please tell me why we are fast becoming a MINORITY voice, in our own country, because of POLITICAL CORRECTNESS ? Please tell me WHY Britons cannot legally wear a bike helmet covering their head in a bank and yet it is ok to wear a Burqa which covers the whole of the face ? And please tell me WHY, when those people who want asylum here can wreck our detention centres and STILL be accepted here ?

What does that say about just who and what are this government's priorities ?
The British people that I speak to have genuine concerns about becoming a second class minority in our own country, and the reasons for it are some of the above. Are you so blind that you cannot see this ? And no, I am NOT racist !!! If I did not like Catholics or Protestants would I be considered racist ? Of course not!

Why is it, that if we object to what is happening in our country we are so often labelled RACIST, in an attempt to shut us up ?

We are fighting Radical Muslims in Afghanistan & Iraq , are we not ? I hear you say, yes but the Muslims we have here are "Not like that " . Well how would we know ? Do we hear ANY of them coming out & speaking AGAINST radicals ? I haven't, have you ? Islam is not compatible with ANY of the values that we hold here in Britain ! Why do you think it would be any different here ? We even have a British born "radical ", whose message is that Britain WILL become a Muslim country, under Sharia Law, & that we had "better get used to it ".

Will both of you grow some "balls", and start sticking up for this country and its people ? We are the people who put you where you are and PAY you to look after our interests. And you are NOT doing that by any stretch of the imagination!

In case it has escaped both of you I would like to remind you that, in the U.K. Government is FOR THE PEOPLE ... OF THE PEOPLE ... & BY THE PEOPLE ... Never forget that because you sure have up till now !

Let us get this out to all — please keep forwarding and if you have people in the press or if you know Politicians — let them know we are dis-satisfied with their behaviour !

Not sure what is more amazing/sad - that people read the Daily Mail or that they believe anything written in it.

There's no point moaning about immigration as no one is ever going to listen to you.

Yes there are problems caused by different cultures (see Rochdale), but when the debate is still at the level of people screaming about the Daily Mail whenever anyone brings it up it is best just not to bother.

Go and have a cup of tea and walk the dog instead.

I am greatly offended by some of the things you have said about by religion.
I am not born here, but I have spent most of my life here.
I am grateful to the British Government & British people for allowing me & my family to live here in democracy.
I do not wish that anyone become Muslim who does not want it.
I do not want Sharia law here - in fact, I will fight it to the end.
Most Muslim people are tolerant of other religions and happily accept that we are a minority here. We are grateful for our Mosques, our Halal meat, and our peaceful neighbours.
We are currently recording Ramadan, and I have not heard one word against the British people of the country during the sermons. In fact, we have been encouraged to embrace Britishness, go to see the Olympics & support the athletes. I do not know anyone personally who wishes something bad on this country.
That doesn't mean that such people exist - sure they do. But they are not all Muslim.
I am truly horrified to hear that people think such things about us. There are extremists within every religion & cult, but they are a tiny tiny minority. They are significant because all it takes is a bombing like 7 July, and I am always a suspect; I am always stopped and asked questions.
Since arriving in this country 32 years ago, I have never left these shores. I love Britain and its way of life, the freedom of expression that we are allowed, the democracy that exists here like nowhere else.

Maybe you will be better after your period.

It's not what you've got; it's where you stick it.

It's a bit like saying all Christians are creationists, religion is not quite as simple as that.

Also why is it always people who only ever go to church for a wedding, Christening or funeral who seem to get so upset about consideration for other religions? (not a go at Pom just other people I've had this discussion with) I see it a bit like a toddler discarding a toy only to then make it it's favourite toy as soon as another kid wants to play with it! Our main religious events have lost their religious meaning and have turned into an excuse to spend money on stuff we don't need.

If you want to talk about immigration why not talk about Europeans coming into the country, why did his rant become all about religion? You might have a point if you talked about people coming to this country to sit on benefits but I suspect it's the minority of immigrants. But then as a tax payer I get equally annoyed by our own unemployable youth sitting on benefits as immigrants. Although if our youths were more employable perhaps there wouldn't be the jobs available to attract immigrants in the first place.

The overseas aid budget is capped at 0.7% of GDP. All of which goes to make the world more secure by helping to raise developing countries out of poverty and also creates new affluent markets for us to export to.

Personally I think it's a bargain

Where I work we've found getting them to turn up (often at all let alone on time) is the first hurdle closely followed by keeping them off Facebook.

Obviously football message boards are different!

The problem is that the less academic are often financially better off staying on benefits than getting work. The marginal rate of tax is actually more than 100% in certain circumstances.

In that context trying hard and getting an education is actually counterproductive, so why bother?

I would say i know because i am friends with many Muslims, and acquaintances of many more, and not one of them have ever mentioned their radical views to me. And Yes, i do hear them speak out in protest of Sharia Law and many extremist Islamic views. Islam is compatible with so many of the values that we hold here in Britain, especially as the core values held in The Qur'an, the Bible and the Torah are extremely similar. Especially considering that the man Christianity holds up as the Messiah, is in Islam, considered a messenger of God.

No- one is screaming about the Daily Mail, just the propensity for the Mail and it's readers to write absolute b0llox about Sharia Law and banning Christmas.
Total misconceptions about both - yet used frequently to show how this countries values are being eroded.

It makes me sad rather than angry.

Ban ? is that spose to be ironic? .... Its free speech .

There are many people with rascist views who keep them concealed for any easy life . I would imagine anyone with Radical Islamist views would not air them to often for the same reason.
I think he means prominent influential Muslims denouncing radicalism in public , to be honest the small number that have, are riding the western gravytrain so to me dont really count.

People get married in churches primarily because of tradition, rather than religion.

Europeans are similar culturally to the British, so integration is generally easier for them. You don't tend to get cities in the UK with 30% French of German, they tend to spread out more evenly. They are also more likely to be employed and pay tax than people from other nations.

The reason the argument on immigration never gets anywhere is because people want to apply emotion to what should be pragmatic discussion.

I thought you'd mentioned the Daily Mail earlier to try and make paint anyone with legitimate concerns about immigration as being a bit unhinged.

Obviously I must have been mistaken.

The history of immigration in this country (and their was an excellent programme about the Ugandans on BBC 2 recently, is that the 1st generation congregate in close proximity then over time the 2nd generation move away or meet / marry people of other races.)

The irony is that papers such as the mail and the express only serve to reinforce fear where 99.9% of it is unnecessary and does not touch the majority of peoples lives
