Had to book my wife's Peugeot in for a diagnostic test today, whilst I was on the phone I was asked if I wanted a chat with the service team when I came in as in 2015 all radios will have to be digital. First I had heard about it but seeing as my wife only does a few thousand miles a year and keeps her cars for about ten years it looks like its an expense that I am going to have to swallow, imagine how busy it's going to be when it gets nearer the time.
Personally any car that' I've driven that has a DAB radio has been shit, always losing signal and bastards to tune.

A quick google shows Kensal to be correct, even when it does shut off local stations will still be broadcasting on FM which is all the mrs listens to anyway, I think I will let them give me the spiel on Thursday next week before showing them what I've read and see what their reaction is, bloody main dealer as well.

Main dealers are the worst of the lot. They make f all from selling cars because margins are so tight, which means they're always looking to gouge on servicing and repairs.

Loftboy,
When my car was delivered last year it came fitted with a Sony DAB radio, the reception is first class tbh I normally only use the radio when I'm driving to football as most of the radio programmes out there are endless waffle apart from say Planet Rock but I cant fault the DAB reception.

Insert one of them *I'm not a petrol head disclaimers*

except mine doesn't say 'party' on it.

Other than buy a new car stereo, is there anything I can do to play my ipod through it?

On the back of the stereo there might well be an mp3 type jack plug - get a 1m lead off ebay and run it somewhere you will be able to plug the ipod in.
Otherwise, there maybe a cd player socket. Your are looking for anything that takes an input.
Quick search on ebay should provide a lead that connects to that input and has a jack on the end to go into your ipod.

What is the model number of the unit?

Fecking bit rate causes what is otherwise a great system to cut out.
I seem to remember that it was supposed to be a 128k bit rate but radios were too expensive to buy with this technology.
I also seem to remember that the BBC decided to lower it to 64k to allow for cheaper radios etc.

This would explain the drop outs I experienced with my focus that had LW/MW/FM and DAB radio as standard.

The DAB was by far the better medium except for the drop outs. :-(

I bought a Griffen iTrip couple years ago. It just slots in your iPod or iPhone and you tune it to a radio frequency not being used. Use the same frequency on your radio and thats it. I use 92.2 most of the country and it works very well. Wasn't expensive but look them up.

Edit. No wires or batteries required

Itrip as he says is the answer.

I know almost nothing about the Premier League even though I try to catch the big games every now and then at the end of the season. But I will say this, Queens Park Rangers is just a fukking sick ass team name. Just sounds so cool.

I used to be a Service Manager at at several Main Dealers . In my experience there is no policy of ripping people off . There is a book time for all repairs and that is what you pay regardless of how long it takes . The real rip off guys are the semi skilled independant " mechanics" who havmt got a clue with modern cars and just replace components til iys foxed then charge for all the parts and the time to fit them all. I wouldget them in my reception asking to speak to my technicians cod they didnt have a clue. A terse "fck off" often offended ... I actually left the motor trade because of the dishonesty of the customers...

The units described above work ok - most of the time, but in my experience, can be affected by interferance. Basically, you plug the ipod into the unit, the unit plugs into the 12v socket and transmits your music on a frequency to which you tune your radio unit at.
So it effectively broadcasts the ipod output.

Alternative for your unit - buy a CD-RB10 lead which plugs into one of the sockets in the rear of your unit. This provides two aux sockets to which you can connect the male equivalentm which itself terminates with a 3.5 mm jack which plugs into your headphone jack on your ipod.
Maybe some faffing with running the cable, but it is less obtrusive than the above option.
Once installed, set your unit to aux (as opposed to Radio or Cd) and off you go.
Ebay have one under item number 321195417767. This includes both leads you require all for unde a tenner.

The one I use does not plug Into anything except the phone or iPod and works very well. No cigarette socket required.

I'm clueless with car radios but I do know main dealers are robbing bastards, I recently changed my timing belt on my Toyota land cruiser and took it to the main dealer to ask how to turn off the timing belt warning light. The young kid behind the counter who looked about 14, told me he would send out a mechanic but it would be 40 quid, I politely told him no thanks went home googled it and done it in approx 30 seconds.

I assume you feel then that around £100 (plus VAT) per hour is a fair labour charge for a grease monkey's time. Because that's what many main dealers charge. Personally, I don't and think it's a total rip off.

BTW - those iTrip things I believe are technically illegal.

DAB is brilliant although in rural areas north of loch lommand and ad parts of the brecon beacons there no signal, but thats the same with reg radio. Also Felixstowe it seems is not part of mainland UK as I cant get any DAB reception there....other than that DAB is superb.

When you go to a Main dealer you expect to get (in no particular order ) . A courtesy car , newspapers , a lift to and collection to the station or home , or your car collected and delivered. All that comes as a fixed cost .

You get a repair by someone who has attended training courses at massive expense to the dealer in all of the new systems that the manufacturer develops eg electric doors , park assist , all of the gadgets that customers like to have on a new car .
All of these systems will have specialist tools that the dealer is contracted to buy .

A main dealer repair is priced on a fixed basis to times established the manufacturer . eg to change front pads is .7 of an hour or 42 mins . That includes getting the car in and out . That is all you will pay , so if the pads are corroded in and it takes 3 hours you pay no extra .
I have worked in independent garages who would charge the 3 hours at say 50 an hour plus the pads and vat .

A Main dealer does not employ grease monkeys ,the workshop and bays should be clean , overalls should be clean , they are technicians on a career path .

Anyone who repairs cars takes on a massive responsibility , your wife or partner will leave the car for a brake repair , the guy will take that system apart and rebuild it , your family will be loaded back in and back on the road , their safety is in that blokes skill and experience .Contrast that with a plumber or locksmith .

I have never worked at any dealer where the policy is to rip off customers , you get rogue employees but they get found out and sacked .

Why the fck would they tell you at all ?

Would you go in to a restaurant and say ," I have heard that you do really nice lamb shank , but you are really a bit dear , could you let me have the recipe and I will have a go myself"? Try ringing an electrician and ask him to sketch a quick wiring diagram for your new wall lights .

They are a business , there to make money or they cease to exist .

And if you think that doing those little things for customers will foster loyalty which will be repaid in the showroom when they change the car think again .

They will travel up to 50 miles to save as much as a 100 quid on a new car , then give it to the local dealer to do the warranty work that the supplying dealer should have done on PDI but didnt cos they knew it wouldnt come back to them.
