Slow, cumbersome, lump, static. Yeah, but you play him and he causes all kinds of nightmares and does that elusive thing other players don't do. He scores goals. Does my nut listening to all the b*llocks about how he's just a bit part lump. Hugely important we keep hold of him.

And that we finally let Manning actually take a penalty!!!

Never knowingly right.

Cross it in to him and he has a chance. He is a crap hold up man. God knows why McLaren didn’t just whip in cross after cross for him after last season.

Sexy Asian dwarves wanted.

Does what it says on the tin.

The problem is that we seem to naturally go long when he’s on, but that’s not his fault.

Give him proper service, play to his strengths and he scores.

Has a good record wherever he’s played.

I know almost nothing about the Premier League even though I try to catch the big games every now and then at the end of the season. But I will say this, Queens Park Rangers is just a fukking sick ass team name. Just sounds so cool.

Sylla was ours at the start of the season. Apparently not very good, but he scored when he was on the pitch.

A big man little man next season. Need a spare for Matt, then Oteh, BOS, Smyth and Eze can fit in.

We need at least one CB, one big beast of a centre Midfield, a hell of a lot more luck and we may just squeak into 21st next season...

Can we go out yet?

Reliable, solid, consistent and a threat given the right tactics - as positive a plan b as we have at our disposal.

Not pretty but scores goals and after all isn't scoring goals the main part of football !!!!!

He will be with us for a while - no doubt - ideally he would be third choice centre forward in an ideal world but money suggests he be at least number two option but in all probability he will be top scorer next season.....

It's pretty difficult to judge an old fashioned striker when you've spent almost the entire season not playing wingers on the wing.

Height being in a direct relation to grief from crowd is not so straightforward. As this graph illustrates.

Percentages are an average of actual height plus perceived height divided by performance.

Smith has been really good for us, never lets us down and should have been used more this season

I think it depends on the team - not as effective against some of the big slow lumps you get in this div - where Wells showed (in 2018 at least!) what a bit of movement can do.

Clearly in a 46+ game season you need more than one striker and Smith should certainly be one of them!

I think the frustration comes from the fact that he doesn't hold the ball up that well - in relation to his size. His specialism is crosses from wide that he can meet, rather than a 'back to goal' game. When you think of the best big men that have played alone up front for us in recent times, Helguson, etc, their game was all about being a focal point that brought others into play.

It's easy to get the most out of Smith, the same way it was with Sylla. Get the ball wide before you get it forwards. Asking him to make something out of a straight ball is where we go wrong.

That being said, the best way to do that seems to be playing him as part of a 2 up front, which typically means 2 in CM, which hasn't always worked well for us, so it's a bit of a conundrum to work out. His stats are impressive though given that and he also does great work in our box when defending set pieces. A good player to have for sure.

why is he labelled as "posh"?

He is hardly Jacob Rees Tw@T is he? His father was also a footballer for Hearts and his grandfather also played football. all in the time when they didn't make millions.

Or is he posh just because he studied for a degree?

Yeah exactly this. Does my nut in seeing a succession of coaches punt the ball at him with his back to goal.

Facing goal, cross the ball at his head. He scores like 1 in 7 chances, so just keep crossing that ball!

I believe it's a light hearted jest he received from his team mates early in his career because he went to uni. Not much more in it than that

It always seems to us that he should be awarded two pens in every game as he always seems to be getting held down or pulled back. Refs see it differently. I seem to remember the same thing with Paul Furlong. Are they seeing something that we don't ?

It's a lighthearted thing based on the fact his full name is Mathieu Smith and he lives in the Putney area (I believe).

Also grew up in Cheltenham which is perceived as reasonably posh/affluent.

In comparison to most footballers he's very well educated and speaks pwoper.

If you met him in the street you'd defo think he's a Rugby type.

There is no doubt he's a great Championship squad player to bring on as a plan B, better yet plan C. Or even to play specific matches when a big lump is needed.

That volley aside, though*, Alun Wyn Jones would offer as much.

* like one of mine or Mark Hughes'.

Just wish he could find that bit of Biily Whitehurst, evil bastard in himself to really dominate / scare the crap out of, opposition centre backs.

Always seems that bit too nice.

Its funny how taller players often get labelled with this "plan B" tag. peter Crouch says as much in his book podcast as well.

But if we played to his strengths, he (and Crouchy) could be a valid and successful plan A.
