I have my moments, but I still feel incredibly excited about going to Loftus Rd, taking my seat (same one for 30 years or more) and watching us play - win lose or draw.
Also for me its not just the game - its pie and mash on Portobello before, Coffee at the Oporto on Golborne, the sheer awe of Trellick Tower, leisurely stroll on Portobello. It's engaging with my sons - less frequent visitors now as they have young children, walking up South Africa rd and standing outside the shops saying hello to faces old and new.
I took a new flame Saturday who has never been to a game before and she was absolutely smitten - sometimes I really think we take for granted this amazing atmosphere and community we have at Loftus Rd...
I understand the apathy that comes with the premier league, international football and the general cynicism that is now inherent in the game, but our little bit of west london pride and those butterflies in the stomach every game keep me going....
Nice piece this - good to keep him up in the public eye. Slight concern now that he is a full international - with AFCON around the corner we could be losing him and a few others in January. I thought he had a good game Saturday, good link up and made himself a nuisance. As mentioned by other posters - once he scores again I think he will click back into place. Nice cameo from Kolli too, he gets my vote above Frey at present.
Last Christmas I sat my three 30-40 year old kids down to watch Young Frankenstein with Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder - the most seminal comedy film ever released... After 20 mins, they all decided they couldn't understand what was funny about it.... Needless to say, they are all banned this Christmas this year....
went to see Bugonia last night... Purposely kept away from the reviews as it obviously has a lot to live up to after the amazing 'Poor thing' by director Yorgos Lanthimos and main protagonist, Emma Stone. It's a fantastic, surreal plotline that toys with the recent covid type conspiracies with Jesse Plemmons playing a you tube educated theorist ably assisted by his impressionable autistic cousin, who believes the world is being run by aliens. It goes down some very dark holes and demonstrates the underbelly of america's detached outsiders, whilst questioning the motives of big pharma. The repartee between Stone and Plemmons is superb and almost effortless, as they take turns to switch the power base of their situation. Thoroughly enjoyable, if a little predictable towards the end - a strong 8/10 for me.
Ironically, you are talking about two lagers that are in the best selling top three in the UK. Fosters, which is distributed by Heineken, sells a LOT of volume, particularly in the north of England. I'm operating a big immersive event in the Waterloo area over eight weeks this Christmas and we have chosen to rename the Fosters with the event name. There's definitely an argument to say that the niche, independent beers and lagers are better tasting, but you will pay a premium for that quality. With the top selling lagers in the UK, controversially I would say they are much of a muchness - Carling's perception within the market is that it is a 'sports' lager, where as Carlsberg is perceived as the 'music' lager. Both are awful session lagers IMHO. Fosters has a perception of cheap, session lager in the market - hence renaming it to give it some appeal. We've chosen to have two lagers on sale at the event - Moretti, as the premium product and Fosters as the pour. Pricepoint is a 50p between the two products.
I've followed England to at least 4 world cups and countless European competitions. I have now come to the point that I seldom travel, and if I do I'm selective about where I go and where I stay. The England fans IMO have become increasingly xenophobic, with a strong sense of entitlement - especially post Brexit. I'm not sure if these 'fans' are right wing, or just enjoy being aggressive, inflammatory and belligerent whilst abroad. It generally stems from behaving in a manner that either belittles the host nation or just brazenly insults them - that generally manifests itself in overtly racist tones. and drunken rhetoric As a result I will occasionally travel, but stay away from the main pinch point areas and commute into the games. I'm sure we are not the only country that are suffering from this issue - I've also been a football tourist many times, taking in the Milan derby, Spanish el classico etc etc. As I don't speak the local vernacular, its difficult to say whether their attitude is right wing based - apart from the obvious games I have visited like Lazio/Roma for instance. I'm all for everyone enjoying themselves - especially when it comes to the beautiful game - but definitely not at the expense of others. Similarly, whilst I will always remain proud to be English, I don't want to be associated with the behaviour and attitudes that have become far too common place at England away games for me.
I kind of get your point, but we were at home and should have been set up to play our game, rather than set up to match them. i think the changes made us lose our intensity and at times in the first half we looked like strangers to each other,,,
Like a few other players today, I really think he should have been a substitution brought on later in the game. I really like him and he can definitely put a great ball in, but I don't think he's a starter. I found the starting line up all wrong today - really frustrating, especially after building up a head of steam over the last few games...
I like him and yes, he speaks a lot of sense and is obviously an intelligent manager - But... that loss today was on him IMO. I don't understand why we are not starting with our best 11 - even premier league managers are fielding their players returning from international duty - why are we resting them? Surely it's easier resting them when we are two or three up - millwall were there for the taking, when Burrell, Saito and dembele came on we played with much more intensity and drive.. It's also frustrating that not for the first time this season, an experienced championship manager like Neil outsmarted Stephan - we have a wealth of talent now, they need to be used more effectively.....
Totally with you on this - I really disliked her character and role in the Godfather, but she delivered it extremely well. No doubt the mark of a true actor. Thoroughly enjoyed her other roles in various films - need to revisit Annie Hall again....
Ok, so a couple of notes/films to add. Absolutely concur with just about every one on 'one battle after another' - Sean Penn is completely convincing as a psycho US Colonel - definitely the best film I've seen this year so far. Also watched 'Play Dirty' showing on prime at the moment with Mark Walhberg, LaKeith Stanfield and Rosa Salazar. It's an entertaining romp, lots of shooting and heist action - it's based on the Parker series of books written by Richard Stark. It plays it out as a comedy - which is an absolute contrast to the more well known Richard Stark/Parker film - 'Point Blank' with Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson, which I consider to be a masterpiece. It's fun though and definitely worth a watch...
I'm tempted to go to the Las Palmas game tomorrow - its an 8.00pm kick off. I've been a couple of times before - both times have been a bit turgid, but its live football after all. We fly back to Luton on Monday....
Agree that Nardi still seems a bit nervy at present. Said to my son as we were leaving - imagine having their keeper behind this team - I thought he was their best player.
Agreed, IMO the game was definitely won in the midfield, Boro look pretty strong without breaking too much of a sweat. Interesting to see how far forward their back four play - joining the midfield, picking up the scraps at every opportunity and feeding the playmakers. I felt that both sides lacked out and out goalscorers, which makes our front two look even more amazing acquisitions.
Manuel Gottsching's soundtrack E2-E4 also provided the backing track for the classic house/electro track 'Sueno Latino' that was stolen and replicated by Detroit legend Derek May. Original -
Agreed - it was even demonstrated on his post wrexham interview when he spoke about the stoke line up, which demonstrates he was already forward thinking to the next opposition. I'm definitely beginning to warm to him, amazing what a couple of wins do. Stoke will be a firmer test though, it will be the first time we come across a form side this season...
