RND
at 12:11 5 Apr 2026

For every Tylon Smith and Tim Akindelele with ‘potential’we still have a Steve Cook and Jimmy Dunne and when (occasionally) fit a JCS to back up Ronnie Royce and Liam Morrison is not deemed ready yet. So we can say there is depth across the centre.

We are clearly light in ‘proven’ championship standard full backs on both sides and Esquidenha is not experienced enough clearly and I fear there is a little over egging the return of Larkeche and his quality by some.

What I hope we do at the end of the season is send RND back to Sheffield but not before sitting him down with Nourry and Julian, asking him if he would like to stay and getting his agent to talk turkey over sensible wages which we can afford on a potential contract of 3-4 years for amortisation purposes to spread the cost. Send him back and ask him to sit tight maybe until well into the window but not look desperate. If we go in early Utd will either want to see what the fuss is about and reassess his performances with us and then crank the money up or they might integrate him back into the squad.

Maybe what happened with Edwards so ideally we would want him pre-season so he hits the ground running. But tell him to hang tight whilst we try and play the negotiation game with his employer.

So in other words a long winded Yes from me to resign him.

Smythie mom for me too.
Thought Varane grew in to the game after a little bit of a shaky start.
Impressed with the back 4 today and RND has really earned his loan fee and wages again.
Ronnie looked more RR again today. Excellent free kick pass over to Paddy O’Vale who also had another good game.

It wouldn’t be us without the Gavison tablets being needs for the last 5 mins + 6 mins added on time.

Noticeable when PS went off that Koki still not adding much at the moment.
Morgan still needing more game time to knock some of those stray passes out of his game and seems like he over stretches to control the ball at times and first touch not great. But there is a player in there.
Kolli continues to impress and his performances are now catching up with his reputation which is great to see.

Kone throwing himself about as usual today and must be due another brace soon with all that hard work.

Great start to the long weekend.

"Martin Rowlands was called up for Ireland too lets not forget through these rules and we were all delighted for him then, not sure what his link was but he certainly didn't sound very Irish when he spoke!"

This thread has expanded since I last posted about the result last night. Love this type of debate :-)

Sorry, a "Professional Plastic Paddy" post oncoming...

Not sure if the posts on here about frontal lobes being not being fully developed are true or taking the Michael etc... but sense of national identity is very much an individual thing and even within my own family myself and my next brother down have very separate national identities. My youngest brother RIP was more akin to me in that respect.

My sense of national identity was not really formed until my late teens or early twenties maybe, hard to be sure looking back at 58. Born in Hammersmith Hospital on the Du Cane Road, lived all my life in West London. Therefore, to Irish people I sound more like a Martin Rowlands than an "Irish" person too.

Parents both Irish immigrants who arrived "on a boat" and through basic adherence to a Catholic way of life, it meant that through local Parish engagement, Catholic Schooling throughout, and lots of close uncles, aunts and cousins in and around us in West London, I was immersed in "Irishness". My mum's brother even owned Irish pubs which we spent weekends in.

Now the difference between myself and Harvey....

other than his Grandfather being from Kenmare (we might even be related) and I am direct 2nd generation through both parents (you see I am already putting in my Irish credentials justification!),

...was that other than a decent spell between the sticks from age 13-15 in the school team, I was never faced with the choice of having the England U15 manager ring up my dad to say "can we speak to your eldest son about playing for England".

Ironically, sat beside me on my desk is my dad's soon to expire English passport, which I have to renew for him this week - so he as an Irish economic migrant, arriving here in the early 60s, he knew the game about integration and got himself an English passport as well as an Irish passport. So I am not sure whether he would have told the U15 England manager to F Off or simply passed the phone to me.

Knowing him he would have asked what the sign on fee was and then told the English U15 manager that the Irish U15 manager had rung earlier and was offering money for me.

So at 15 if it had happened I could have very well accepted, had it been put in front of me then.

I think for me, living in London as a teenager during the 1980s and during that period "The Troubles" came to London, I became aware of and exposed to a great deal of the anti-Irish sentiments and "thick paddy" racism which would have naturally occurred within my English people around me as a result of bombs going off around us. If the Irish race were green skinned, then a lot less anti-Irish sentiments and racist comments would have been openly said in front of me. I know there has been studies on the effects of being born and bred in the UK for "2nd Gen Irish". So it may have been at that time I began to subconsciously decide whether to distance myself from my Irishness and "be English" ( as one of my friends stated about himself many years go "I can't help the "O" in my surname - I am Irish in name only).

So, I ended up, and perhaps, only in my own head "officially Irish". From the time my first passport expired as an adult I have only had an Irish passport, my wife is from Cork (that just happened, was not a part of the plan to Paddy meself up) and our kids currently only have Irish passports. The first other person, actually a "celeb" I have come across who I think expresses their Irishness in the same way I feel about it is Dermot O'Leary. I listened to an interview where he was talking about it and some people were questioning afterwards how he could possibly think he "Irish". To me, I get it, I feel exactly the same.

HOWEVER, all that is irrelevant but I like to get that off my chest - because the cynical part of me thinks that Harvey Vale has always had designs on playing for England, got to age 22 when he is now thinking realistically, will I get in to an England squad in the next 10 years? and only then starts taking his Grandad more seriously when he says "you would qualify for Ireland young lad".

I hope I am not doing Harvey an injustice, maybe like me he has grown in to his Irishness as he got in to his 20s and has felt the force of the green side?

Vale call-up
at 23:00 26 Mar 2026

Its easy to forget after a defeat that Ireland has such a small population that the best we can field in 2026 is the likes of Alan Browne, Molumby, Ogbene and still having to rely on great servants like Coleman. It really was like watching the R’s on a bad day against another awful team who both ran out of ideas and puff well before the end.

When Vale came on I thought it is written in the stars for his winning pen.

Then up steps Browne

As I have watched the highlights 246 times this evening I believe Rich Kone was merely giving a nod to the Smythie celebration without any chance of properly emulating it 🧐

I’m probably gonna regret writing this when I am sober in the morning
at 23:53 24 Feb 2026

I was out with my former band mates of 30+ years for our annual February Christmas drinks tonight.
Knew it classed with the Soton game but no harm.

Heard the result at some point and when I got on the tube and went online the first thing I came upon was our young club commentator’s video from 11hrs ago about his ongoing eating disorder.

My heart was broken listening to such an intelligent and articulate young man who I had wrongly assumed had his s h i t together at such a young age talking in the same way as my eldest daughter does about her self hatred of her appearance and he is in no way anyway near how bad my eldest still is about food.

Yes we got spanked tonight but I would rather everyone who is a parent of young kids or maybe thinking of having kids watches and heeds this f u c k ing disaster that is happening to this younger generations and especially to young boys and men now as well as girls and if nothing else just prepares yourself and arm yourself with the tools to help the tidal way of mental health issues that is now becoming prevalent.

Sorry for the rant but at least I posted this after a battering and last Saturday.

Look out for everyone

Both my in-laws were Irish
As are my parents - who are thankfully both still hanging in there.

I could write a 400 page essay on the effects of alcoholism, generational trauma and cultivating forgiveness through understanding and acceptance which for us comes through extensive family therapy.

But it won’t be of any interest to the masses until you’ve been through it or are going through it.

So I will save you 😆

I hope everyone has enjoyed that socials impressionist who has reworked Elton John “I Guess That’s Why They Call Them The Goons”

Living off set plays
Fouling the goalie
Under the crossbar
And I guess that’s why they call them the Goons!”

My next door neighbour a CAFC season ticket holder had a spare for me last night beside him and he was telling me on the way that Jones has said that he needs to wear plasters on his fingers otherwise he continually bites his nails during matches. He agreed that Jones is a bit like Warnock in that everyone hates him until he becomes your manager and he has survived there two years and got them back up so they like him for that.

The Charlton fans around me last night were proper bricking it for the last 10mins and were baffled by Jones’ changes which they blamed for allowing us to push on looking for the winner.

Enjoyable night out at a new ground for me but a long slog home to Ruislip and the neighbour does that for every home game.

Field to Norwich
at 22:24 2 Feb 2026

I think ‘not wanted’ is maybe a bit unfair.
He has made 19 appearances this season and as far as I can remember he has not been left out of the squad on a match day unless injured.

Fairer to say has dropped down the pecking order this season and used as 3rd or 4th starting choice but can be relied upon to fill in.

If he feels he cannot fight his way past a fit Hayden or Varane probably feels he will have to move on to find regular first team starts. It will be interesting to see how he gets on with Norwich.

Wish him the very best and still welcome to marry one of my daughters- the right sort.

The 3 ly sides of a match thread at Oxford

I was getting a bit annoyed by that co-comms bloke and his "I know the conditions are atrocious.....BUT.....".

Really easy from the comfort of an armchair or a keyboard to say that the players should be able to play as if it were a bright sunny day when presented with last night's conditions.

Not looking to give them more excuses but I wonder if the 3 stands and a completely open end exacerbate the wind swirl or driving rain - it did not seem to ever let up from the tv pictures.

Fair f''ks to the hardy QPR away support who put them through that game whilst on the terraces in those conditions last night.
