You have to question the judgement of someone who pays £1k + for a cardigan 🤨

Gaffer on final game of the season and stuff he's learnt
at 13:43 1 May 2026

That’s good to hear..😁

I just think on occasions, such as some of Dave Mc’s questions he sometimes avoids & or doesn’t answer as fully as he could.

Fully appreciate on some media channels he may be restricted in how he can respond.

I think JS does an excellent job…of obfuscation & avoiding some of the tricky questions he doesn’t want to directly answer

Wonderful stuff… it’s as if McDonald could see into the future what Hughes would do to the club.

Get your revenge in first!

Anatomy of a season – Report
at 10:37 27 Apr 2026

Exactly right… if the team are playing well the transfers will look after themselves, particularly with all the scouting & data models teams are using these days. Back in the day players like Sinton, Ferdinand & Peacock moved on from GF’s excellent side in the PL.

Kane & Burrell will already be appearing on other teams radar but a good season overall with a higher league finish would make them even more attractive.

Setting out your stall, with a stated aim as a development club geared towards selling players as the priority seems to be the wrong way around to me, the main aim should be to develop the players as far as possible (keep them fit & available!) to build a strong team. Others will then come sniffing around for the best, it’s the way it’s worked for years.

What he’s saying is exactly right, a good blend of youth & experience to lead the way is what is needed, particularly in the attritional championship.

No one at the club should be, surprised or threatened by this it is a statement of the footballing “bleeding obvious”…However it doesn’t necessarily work like that.

With Cook & probably Field moving on they need to replace that experience & unfortunately don’t think Hayden is going to do it.

Back in the day think about players like Venables, McLintock, Wilkins, Palmer, Furlong, Bircham, Gallen, Derry & Hill. Some of that nous is needed to run the dressing room & show leadership on the pitch.

He deserves another year from the point of stability & avoiding yet another pay off. He’s broadly done what’s been asked of him & not sure actually changing the head coach will make a massive difference in the club’s current set up. He’s done slightly better than last season but had a better squad so that is the minimum requirement really.

However does really need to show what he’s learnt from his 1st season in the country/division & adopt a much more flexible approach.

Much also depends on what squad he’s got after the ins & outs of the summer, whatever they may be?

But 442 every week won’t cut it if they want further improvement.

JS says he has played with other formations in France so needs to show much more tactical flexibility next season. Continually outnumbered in central midfield, the 4 4 2 tactics have been worked out & exploited by other teams.

Madsen is a cut above the other midfielders & it has really shown up the last couple of games when he has come on. Need some aggression & legs to play with him next season please.

He actually said he has just finished his PHD…

I’m not saying he’s right, it just occurred to me how he was dealing with valid questions.

He’s obviously defending his position & using the stats to try to back that up, as to most fans it appears the team have had significant injury issues for several years.

Many thanks to all who put this together, it’s good to try to have an open& direct dialogue between the club & fans, for people to make their own minds up about it.

A few things occur to me, having listened to it..

Ben Williams concedes he’s not used to dealing directly with fans & doing podcasts, interviews etc. His answers (again which he concedes) aren’t always succinct & directly address points raised in a concise manner. He’s a scientist & his language reflects that.

When asked about the condition of the pitch & if it contributed to the injuries, he compared it to league 1 or 2 club pitches & stated there was no extrapolation of injuries caused by these presumably poorer pitches. Why compare with leagues 1& 2, is that the level of budget or expertise they have for it. Shouldn’t he be comparing with Championship clubs?

Regarding comms around injuries, which again he admitted could improve. He makes a valid point about levels of confidentiality & GDPR etc, but there has to be a happy medium between the current void of information regarding injured players EG Chair, Madsen, Burrell etc. I appreciate things change (for good or bad) with injury & estimated recovery, but a more regular update with what can be shared would be good for fans. Rather than the absolute silence around some players.

As mentioned would be good to have follow up episodes with him to discuss progress..

Chelsea fined £10.75m

They provided 10,000 documents… trying to drown the investigation? Will they consider £10m just the cost of doing business?
