Great post and I’m glad you had such a great time.
I’ve not been following it all that much, tbh, but my Instagram thingy has been sending me clips of Americans being blown away by how the England fans are having such a great time and “don’t go round smashing things up after all”. Warms the old cockles, it does.
The clips of post-Mexico match are even better, so it would be great to hear from one of our own who experienced that. |

Just back, so a couple of bits n bobs to consider for anyone else planning a trip.
We stayed at The Hotel Isaac on MacCurtain St. Lovely, boutique style hotel, nice rooms, excellent breakfast (resist the Full Irish though, as it wasnt as massive as you might think and the other options are nicer) and just a 5 min walk from the 225/6 bus stop for the airport. It’s has a very popular bar and restaurant there but the noise isn’t too bad at all.
We barely left that area in the evenings, truth be told. First night was the Cin E, where they had a trad band first, then a fantastic country/blues trio, but we preferred the place next door, The Corner House, where we went the next night. Two of the three musicians from the night before played, but a completely different set - seems there is Blues collective in Cork that calls itself the Lee Delta Blues - I mean, how cool is that?
We liked The Shelbourne pub too, fantastic atmosphere there on Friday night.
Food, we ate at Thomson’s one night and Gallagher’s the other - both were pretty good and around Euro 23-25 for a main course. Great Beamish & Beef pie in the latter. Book in advance, though!
Did stuff already mentioned above during the day - Blarney was lovely. The queue for the actual stone was massive so we didn’t bother but as we wandered round then the story of it was shown by the lake, so that was good enough for us.
Many thanks again to everyone who posted some advice here, especially Cork’s own Mr McCarthy, of course.

Just popped on to say what a great read this thread is. I mean, I haven’t a scooby what you’re all talking about and I read all three pages and still don’t, but that just might add to the enjoyment of it!

Brilliant fixture.
I saw them play Sampdoria at home in the mid-90s. A lucky coincidence I was there then because I liked Sampdoria, (C4 on sundays, everyone picked a team back then) mainly because of the kit and Roberto Mancini was essentially Stan in an expensive suit and lack of gambling habit.
Of course, he wasn’t there by then and as I went with a couple of locals, I very quickly changed allegiances and got to call David Platt “Bastardo Inglese” a few times.
Gorgeous shirts, too. Had to buy one, natch. |

I saw Boot Led Zep about, ooh, 15 years ago now at the Gordon Craig in Stevenage.
I mention the venue because it was a stones throw from Knebworth, as some wag in the audience pointed out more than once, without any response from the band.
First time i’d seen a tribute act and they didnt break character once, which I found a bit weird.
“Jimmy” was a lefty though.

I was just out walking the dog and I thought to myself, sht, it’s East, isn’t it. Although to be fair, I think I had my Ipad upside down at the time. Regardless, I’m someone who always walks in the wrong direction when I come out of a shop. |

We’re flying and not intending on hiring a car.
We thought we would do the obvious one and go to Blarney Castle, we like all that stuff, a bit of history, etc. We also thought we’d go to a museum or two. We’re getting on a bit, so nothing too strenuous!
We thought we would stay in the centre so we we have a good choice of pubs with simple, reasonably priced food for the evening but want to avoid the football like the plague - much rather watch some trad. music and neck a few pints of the black stuff.
Boston: It’s not South at all, actually. My mistake/ingorance. It’s West - Waterford 🙈
So stuff we can go to during the day thst isn’t too difficult to get to, then good pubs for the music and black stuff (I’m aware that Cork is a Murphy’s town). [Post edited 15 Jun 15:22]

Afternoon All
I wondered if anyone has any tips for visiting Cork? What to visit, places to stay, etc?
All a bit last minute as we usually go much further south to visit friends who basically take us everywhere and do all the thinking for us, but one of them has recently become unwell needs to rest, so having already paid for the flights, we thought we would see what Cork has to offer.
All suggestions and ideas will be very much appreciated 👍

Give the guitar another go, ‘68.
It’s tricky at first and as said above, you do need to put some hard yards in and it will take some time for your fingertips to develop a tougher skin, BUT, once you’ve got the chord shape muscle memory in place, it’s just so addictive and you’ll find yourself picking it up and playing at all times of the day.
Just DONT quit because you can’t play barre chords - that’s where so many beginners decide it’s too much for them, but keep going, it’ll come to you.

Walton Goggins is a fantastic actor. He’s great in Justified, too.
