Of course, we do need money, what this translates to is it possibly means our current owners did not want to sell or at least not to him. This is good news. In that it means they want to stay owners for now and if they do want out, it won't be at a cheap price.
Could be journo trolling. But he is correct when he joined all the quality players like Freeman, Eze, BFG, Hall, Furs2, Cameron etc, he with his cart horse turning capability did indeed bring the team down to a "mediocre side".
If the quote is correct, then he knows this himself as he says "I’ve always", yes you always have, I agree. This is because your the one who brings them down...allegedly.
Derby FC have sold their ground for £40m to themselves and to keep themselves inside FFP.
But what is to stop them buying back the ground 1 year later for say £10m as infrastructure costs do not count under FFP and thus having a transfer kitty and also 3 years of possible losses reset every couple of years or so?
Are there any rules against this? Can they rinse and repeat?
I can see what they were thinking. Back in the day we bought the Bard from Watford who was playing there as a Right-Mid. He could cross without beating his man and support the fullback. We converted him into an attacking FB who could also defend properly. It worked. One of the best RB to play in the hoops. The real key to complimenting his skills (crossing, tackling and heading), was he had pace. Lots of it.
So, I assume Les thought they could do the same with Bidwell. I get it. Problem is he does not have the pace. So, he can get caught out by the pacey winger. The Bard would recover his position with a sliding tackle and using his pace. Bidwell does not have that pace so, he cannot do this and gets caught out.
Sometimes when you buy a player who you want to play in a different position works out, sometimes the experiment does not. No matter how expensive it was. That is the way it is.
I would use Bidwell as a sub for Left-Mid which is what he is good at and go out and I am afraid to say it but buy another LB. One with pace and that tackles well. But maybe as we have to do it on a budget might not be an attacking LB. But a pacey defender first.
We cannot just play Bidwell at LB just because we paid lots for him. That is the way it goes sometimes. He is not terrible but he is a squad player only for us. Robinson is injury probe so, we need a new LB. That is the way it is sometimes. He just does not have the pace we need.
Assuming the young players like Cole, Petrasso step up and Hoilett gets a much reduced new deal, then for next season we only need about 4 new players after our clear-out to challenge.
These could be in the positions: RB x1 - Ahead of Perch and with pace. LW x1 - Backup CB x1 - Backup or to even be ahead of Ned. Someone who is strong in the air, like Dunn used to be. CF x1 - We need a proper target man for Conor to play off, with Seb being the backup
If as suspected Hoilett departs over the summer, then we shall also need in addition another LW.
Thus with 4-5 new players we could make a good challenge for play-offs. This should be possible once all the expensive hangers on have been discarded and the FFP situation has been dealt with.
Defenders: Coll DONALDSON Max EHMER Nedum ONUOHA Danny SIMPSON Yun SUK-YOUNG Michael HARRIMAN
Midfielders: Joey BARTON Karl HENRY Junior HOILETT Michael PETRASSO Matt PHILLIPS Frankie SUTHERLAND Shaun WRIGHT-PHILLIPS Samba DIAKITE Esteban GRANERO Adel TAARABT
Strikers: Charlie AUSTIN Tom HITCHCOCK Loic REMY
That leaves us with 21 players, not all of them first teamers.
Assumptions: Lets assume that the following players will be sold: Loic REMY, Adel TAARABT, Julio CESAR
Numbers go down to 18 players after those sales.
Lets assume that the following players will get new contracts: Robert GREEN Richard DUNNE (apparently the rumor is he gets an auto 1-year renewal if he plays enough games which he has). Clint HILL (rumours of a deal for one more year) Armand TRAORE (considered a back up left-winger) Niko KRANJCAR (assuming Harry stays, he will be signed) Alejandro FAURLIN (promised a new contract, we shall see) Gary O'NEIL (gets a new 1-year deal for 'taking one for the team'. Club will no doubt show loyalty here)
That leaves us with 25 players. So, this means we would probably buy around 10 players at least to get us to 35 players. Fulham had 45 so, 35 is not large.
We would clearly need 3 more strikers and we all know we need a left back and two central defenders. And possibly even a right back as well. Along with a left winger. Could be another merry go round of transfers.
On the list I assume would be: Ravel MORRISON age 21(to replace Adel) Gary Hooper age 26 (not that many prem goals, but in a poor Norwich side and would be cheaper wages wise than some big prem star we cannot afford anyway). Sebastien Bassong age 27 (not great, but we are going to be in cheap mode now) Jordan Rhodes age 24 (goal machine we need to try out in the Prem and Blackburn need the money)
Dunno about the rest? Wasn't there some guy from Wigan who was a very good defender? Lets hope we do not buy a load of silly players again.
BTW: Even I went to Wembley. Block E, Stairway 502, Row 33 Seat 44. Harry is a lucky manager.
Back to sleep now. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
