The U's ran out victors in the first of two pre-season games while at a training camp in Holland, beating SDC Putten thanks to three goals from set pieces.

The game saw Magnus Okuonghae get his first match action for six months after returning to fitness following an operation at the latter half of last season, and it was his partner in central defence who opened the scoring on nine minutes. Pat Baldwin got his head on the end of a corner, putting the ball high over the home side's keeper to score a rare goal, despite a defender's efforts to clear from the line.

15 minutes later, Steven Gillespie went close to making it 2-0. With United dominating and a lot of crosses being put into the box, Gillespie saw a header acrobatically saved by the Putten keeper.

Minutes later, just before the half-hour mark, the U's doubled their lead. Gillespie was upended just outside of the D and summer signing Michael Rose put in a low direct freekick in the bottom left corner.

At half time, manager John Ward made seven changes, leaving on Andy Bond, Lloyd James, Kayode Odejayi and Gillespie. It was the latter who grabbed United's third just after the break. One-on-one with the Putten keeper, Gillespie was fouled in the box and he stepped up to take the resulting penalty, putting the ball to the keeper's right and in the back of the net.

The remainder of the game saw Anthony Wordsworth score twice, but both goals were ruled offside. The first was a tap in from a low cross from the right by Brian Wilson. The second was five minutes from time, when Ian Henderson hit the woodwork and young Craig Arnott squared the rebound to Wordsworth, having been in an offside position when Henderson played the ball.

Ben Williams missed the game due to illness, while John-Joe O'Toole and Ashley Vincent were rested as a precaution due to respective foot and back injuries.

First half: Pentney, White, Baldwin, Okuonghae, Rose, Bond, Izzet, James, Coker, Gillespie, Odejayi.

Second half: Cousins, Wilson, Eastman, Heath, Bender, Henderson, James (Coker), Bond (Hamilton), Wordsworth, Gillespie (Arnott), Odejayi (White).
