No Action Over Terry Coles Tragedy

Police have ruled out the possibility of criminal proceedings following the death of a Swansea City fan trampled to death by a police horse outside a football game last year.

South Yorkshire Police have said no action will be taken after the death of Terry Coles in an incident outside Rotherham United's Millmoor ground on May 6th 2000.

Mr Coles, 41, died in hospital after suffering a fractured skull and crush injuries before the third division championship decider between the two clubs.

South Yorkshire Police had called in colleagues from the West Yorkshire force to investigate the incident and the Police Complaints Authority was notified.

The tragedy unfolded as rival supporters threw missiles at each other as about 100 Swansea fans were escorted to Rotherham's Millmoor Lane ground.

Security video footage showed people crouching against a wall outside the ground trying to escape the missiles.

There was no suggestion that Mr Coles was involved in any violence - his friends said he was trying to calm the situation down.

The police horse, one of three in the vicinity, was cantering down a slope to deal with the trouble when it collided with Mr Coles.

At the time of the tragedy South Yorkshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Tim Hollis said: "The victim had not seen the horse and he appeared to be walking into the line of the animal.

"It quite clearly rides over him."

It is understood that a post mortem examination showed that he suffered a fractured skull as he fell to the ground, but crush injuries to his spleen and kidney were the cause of death.
