Back Sterling to shine — betting
Saturday, 18th Oct 2014 09:15 by Owen Goulding

Professional odds compiler Owen Goulding says Raheem Sterling can enjoy a happy return to Loftus Road on Sunday, and make you some money into the bargain.

What seems like an eternal international break full of shock results has come to an end and Liverpool travel to London hoping to avoid being on the end of a shock themselves. From my point of view as a statistician, they needn’t worry.

QPR have put in some shocking performances this season, but I find it hard to remember a more lacklustre showing than at Upton Park a few weeks ago. It truly was woeful. No passion, no pace, no pride and Harry just sitting there showing no desire himself. The simple fact is if your manager can’t get motivated then what hope has the team? Especially when everyone knows Harry's strength has always been in his motivation and not in his coaching.

QPR are currently doomed to a quick return to the Championship . Tony Fernandes can tweet the word 'stability' as much as he likes but for me there is no coming back from the current malaise sweeping through the club. The players are in need of a new leader- it is so blindingly obvious it’s painful. I feel for the fans who are forking out wads of money week in week out to watch these performances at present. I feel sorry for certain players who no matter what they do can’t curry favour with the manager.

Two examples of his terrible management were glaringly obvious at Upton Park and they are mistakes that are being made over and over again. Nedum Onuaha being played in a position that clearly isn’t his preferred one, whilst an out of form aged centre half continues to make mistake after mistake in the position Ned wants to play. Harry moans about lack of pace, then replaces Hoilett (arguably Rangers most dangerous outlet in the first 45 mins) at half time. It feels to me that Harry is having a laugh at the expense of the gullible Fernandes , and as a QPR fan, it fills me with rage.

With regards the opposition, Liverpool are in no great shakes themselves. They are desperately missing Suarez and Sturridge. The biggest trouble for QPR at the moment though is the way anyone with any movement or pace is exposing the Ferdinand led defence with ease. On Sunday, they come up against Raheem Sterling. The pace and movement he provides is no doubt giving Ferdinand nightmares as we speak- assuming he actually is thinking about the game not merely wondering which Waterstones he'll be book signing at next.

With a midfield of Henry and Sandro likely to be the only protection, Sterling's return to Loftus Road is likely to feel like a birthday with the gifts the Rangers backline is likely to bestow on him. Assuming he starts, 21/10 for him to score at any time seems a monster price. I dare say a number of Rangers fans would be happy for us to get a stuffing this week if it finally ousts the unmotivated media junkie.

Elsewhere my bet of the weekend comes in League Two where newly appointed manager Micky Adams takes his Tranmere side to Oxford. Tranmere are holding up the table at present but their squad is much better than their position suggests. With Adams taking the reins, I expect a big upturn in results in recent weeks and they can start it off here against a stuttering Oxford United. Based on the expected line-ups and adding in the new manager variable, 14/5 looks a price definitely worth an interest.
