Saints Chasing Joint Second Best Ever Season Ever.
Friday, 10th Apr 2015 11:54

Saints can achieve their joint best ever league season in terms of position, if they can put together a winning run over the last seven games.

Older Saints fans will tell anyone who cares to listen that the club's best ever season was 1983/84 when we finished 2nd in the League to a then almost unbeatable Liverpool side and also lost an FA Cup Semi Final to Everton.

But many will forget that the following year 1984/85 was our second best ever season with a fifth placed position, these were golden days for Saints and in terms of league position bettered even the Keegan era when we ended up 6th and 7th respectively.

Since 1985 good seasons have become rarer, 1989/90 saw us finish 7th which going into the last two games could even have been 3rd, but that would be our last top ten finish till 2000/01 followed up by what is still our joint best Premier League finish of 8th in 2002/03 equalled last season

So this season could yet well equal our second best top flight finish if we can overhaul both Spurs and Liverpool in these last seven games and this perhaps emphasises just how wel we have done this season, yes in some ways at the moment it feels disappointing as at one point it looked like being so much better, but it is still better than last season and even if it doesnt match that 1985 position it could still be our 4th or 5th best positon ever.

So there is a lot to play for, Katharina Liebherr and her board along with Ronald Koeman are putting in foundations that will hopefully last, perhaps some will claim we havent invested enough into players, but we are building gradually not chasing rainbows and in the long term that will hopefully serve us well.

So we need every Saints fan to get behind the team, at time of writing there are still seats left for the Hull City game and that is strange, there are truly few seasons in the history of our club that have been better lets all play our part to make sure that is the case.

February 1984, the season I started following the Saints ! Not that I jumped on the band wagon, I was only 8.. ! I picked their name out of the proverbial hat plus we won the FA cup same month as I was born. Fate!!
