Improved Pompey show would be wise at Morecambe
Improved Pompey show would be wise at Morecambe

James Dunne is not exactly revealing something new when he says Pompey's away form is not good enough, but fans will at least be heartened to know the squad's minds are focused on doing something about it.

Had the Blues performed on the road anywhere near as well as they have done at home over the course of the season, they'd still be eyeing up the play-offs and possible promotion with these few games to go.

But they've fallen short - with the surrender of a 2-1 deep into injury time the latest failure to come home with maximum points away from Fratton.

This weekend they are back in the north-east - at Morecambe - and Dunne says they're determined to improve their away showing.

He told the club website: 'It’s another long trip for us this weekend and it will be a tough game, but we know we have to do better on the road. We’ve got one of the worst records in the league. That’s something we have to look at and try to put right.

'We should have won our last away game at Carlisle and were disappointed to concede a last-minute goal and only take a point. But we had a good result against Plymouth on Monday and have some momentum to take into Saturday’s match.

'We haven’t been consistent enough and haven’t won enough games, so hopefully we can finish this season well and then look to do better in the next one.'

Boss Andy Awford has plenty of selection options for the game. Stirker Paul McCallum is back in contention after missing the Easter games.

But Ben Chorley is still struggling with a back problem and Danny East (hamstring), Andy Barcham (knee), Jack Whatmough (knee) and Paul Robinson (broken cheekbone) are all still out.
