QPR call time on Miller but reward juniors with deals – evening news
QPR call time on Miller but reward juniors with deals – evening news
Wednesday, 13th May 2009 23:10

It has been a days of goings and stayings at Loftus Road with Irish news sources reporting that midfielder Liam Miller has left QPR while several juniors have been rewarded for their efforts with professional deals.

Miller, a full Republic of Ireland international, joined QPR from Sunderland in January on a half season contract allegedly on the recommendation of his national manager Giovanni Trapattoni. Despite starting brightly he quickly faded and has been one of QPR’s poorest performers in a lacklustre end to the season.

It is no surprise to hear that his deal is not being removed and although Rangers are yet to announce his departure officially the Irish Independent has confirmed today that he has left Loftus Road for good and has been training with Cork City to maintain is fitness. The paper reports that Miller is attracting interest from a host of Championship clubs and without wishing to be unduly cruel I cannot believe any of them have actually watched him over the last couple of months if that is the case.

Youngsters Danny Davenport, Josh Parker and Ed Harris are staying at Loftus Road after signing one year contracts. Joe Oastler, who signed from Portsmouth’s youth set up last summer, and Lee Brown have signed one year extensions. Max Ehmer and Antonio German, who made his first team debut at Southampton earlier this season, have both signed pro-deals.

Youth team manager Keith Ryan told QPR World: “You can win the league every season but if you don’t produce a player than there are maybe some questions that are asked. We’ve got three that have been signed on pro forms which is good, we have had a young lad Antonio German who has played in the first team which is a huge bonus for the youth set up so I think all in all, when you analyse it all, it [the season] has been fairly successful.

“It is nice for these lads to find a route through. It is very difficult, I know as well as anyone that to make it as a professional it is very tough and finding those young boys with all the right attributes is difficult.”

Incidentally I still cannot recall an official announcement from the club around the departure of Ryan’s previous partner Steve Brown.

Somebody QPR are said to be keen to offer a contract to, should a deal be agreed, is Tottenham’s Adel Taarabt who spent the final few weeks of the season on loan at Loftus Road until torn knee ligaments brought his spell to a premature end. Taarabt’s faultless ball control and silky skills won many admirers in W12 and although he initially said the spell was solely to get him fit for first team football at Spurs he has since seemed more open to the idea of a permanent switch elsewhere with chances at White Hart Lane limited.

His recovery from surgery is progressing well and he should be available for pre-season training – whichever club that may be with. “It’s better now. I’m running again and I don’t feel any pain, thank God,” he told Moroccan football site liondelatlas.net.

In former QPR news it as been a week of celebration for former skipper Alan McDonald. His Glentoran side won the Northern Irish Premiership and Macca has ended long running contract uncertainty by agreeing a new two year deal..

McDonald told the BBC: “I will be talking to the chairman on Wednesday and hopefully we can get this concluded. Saturday will live in my mind for ever. It was one of the best days of my life. I received this in November and I said then that if I won it in April we would have done something special, and we have. I would like to dedicate it to my staff. They have been magnificent and do everything for the players.”

Elsewhere in the Championship today, as predicted on LFW last night, the play off semi final defeat against Burnley has triggered the widely anticipated resignation of Reading manager Steve Coppell. The bad news doesn’t stop there for The Royals with defender Andre Bikey facing a misconduct charge for his reaction to his sending off in the first leg – Bikey tore off his shirt and threw it at the referee before leaving the field.

A manager who believes he is staying in employment is Barnsley’s Simon Davey. The Tykes escaped relegation on the last day of the season with a win at Plymouth but owner Patrick Cryne’s claim that Davey had made a “persuasive argument to stay” didn’t inspire much confidence in the manager’s future at Oakwell. Davey said today: “I'm manager of this football club and will be busy planning and preparing us for next season. The players have always been behind me and when I was getting stick last season never once did any of them question my ability.”
